Ocular migraines are common after an ablation. Oddly my first two ablations were with sedation and I had none then, but when I had my third with a GA I did. They should disappear over the next few weeks, so don't worry you're highly unlikely to have them for life.

Thanks so much ! 🤞🏼

Quite common Anne as described in the attached AF Association factsheet which you should find helpful

Thanks for the link it’s very helpful. I was concerned bc I am a month out but the info helps. I suspect that we are all different.

Very common and mentioned in our fact sheet on recovery. I had to go to one of Europe's top EPs to find out why . (Transeptal punctures)

I had 2 transeptal punctures. I wonder if that makes me twice as likely :)

No. These usually fade away after a couple of weeks.

Interestingly in 2019 I had an ablation for atrial tachycardia and post that they did an echocardiogram next morning to check pressures in each side to make sure there was no excess regurgitation. Never had that done before. One of the top London heart hospitals.

Why two by the way? Did they get lost first time?

No idea why 2…that is a good question. They did PVI and carina and posterior wall so?

You only need one doorway to get into a room. lol 😁

Quite common as I'm led to believe. I too had cryo ablation under sedation and had about 1/2 ocular episodes per week for 2/3 weeks. Wavy lines in my vision when the sun or light shone at an angle especially when playing golf. Lasted a couple of minutes - or should I say a couple of holes which elevated my scoring LOL. I used to put on my sunglasses and this helped my vision.

I had had those before I had an ablation but had a few really bad ones after, not helped I think by ‘going back to normal activities’ in a few days as suggested by my hospital fact sheet. If you had any other stroke symptoms I would have them checked out asap but if not be reassured it’s very common.

I had one years before the ablation and I used to have migraines (before menopause…I’m 65) Do you suspect it’s correlated to going back to “normal life” too quickly? And what the heck other symptoms should worry me? I am a psychotherapist and went back to work (as it is no heavy lifting or moving about)I had one on day 5 after the ablation. And 2 more since

I am 4 1/2 weeks out from the procedure

This is a nerve wracking diagnosis that’s for sure!

I had my ablation a week ago and have had 3 minor aural / ocular migraines, they each lasted several minutes and were all without pain.

Had migraines after both my ablations, went away after a few days. I get upset that EP’s and cardiologists don’t seem to know about this, but most of the patients I’ve spoken to do!!!

Crazy that this is not common knowledge for our Drs

Thank you for your posts on ocular migraine’s. I am 5 months post first cryoablation and have had about 5 of them over this period with the last about a week ago. None of my doctors linked them to the ablation. I thought maybe it was from the Eliquis. It sounds like they will hopefully stop. What is the link with an ablation and should I be worried I am still occasionally getting them?

AnneRB profile image
AnneRB in reply toM987

No idea if we should be worried ?there is more on this stream about this side effect than either of my Drs (EP or Cardiologist ) have offered

I think it is the transeptal puncture that is the cause. Though why going from the right to the left atrium causes a visual effect?… it’s beyond my pay grade!

Ive had 2 left ventricle trans septal procedures and 2 right ventricle procedures with no septum puncture.

Aura migraines for 3-4 days with both left ventricle procedures.

I had ‘Kalidascope’ vision day after ablation and after 8 hours in A&E (following a 111 call) I was admitted as a precaution in case of having a stroke. While waiting the next day to be seen by the stroke consultant I went searching through this great forum and found the info that this is a ‘common’ side effect following ablation. Mentioned this to the stroke consultant who said she had never heard of this link, though the accompanying research nurse had! Anyway following several tests I was diagnosed with occular migraine (no pain at all). Had about 6 episodes over three days and then they stopped. As a side note my ablation seems to be quite effective, no AF so far 4 weeks after ablation (usually had 1 or 2 episodes every few weeks) so keeping my fingers crossed!🤓👍

Don't worry ocular migraines are quite common after ablations where the septum is punctured. I had between one and three daily for a week or more after my cyro ablation but, happily, they stopped. Hang in there...

I had them after ablation - they will go away on their own :)

I remember having one at the end an ablation. I think they were just starting to bring me back around and I remember trying to say “ocular migraine” through the mask over my mouth. 😂 Next thing I knew someone was knocking me out again!

Good grief I’m impressed that you knew what it was at that moment!!

I was impressed too and thought the medical staff would be as well! Lol! 😂
