I take Magnesium Glycinate bought online from YourSupplements. They were recommended to me by another member on this forum. Some magnesium supplements give me a sore stomach, these don't.

I’ve ordered magnesium taurate as I didn’t know which one to get. I will see how I get on with those and if not I will try the ones you have. How many do you take a day. Carron.

I just take 1 x 200mg each morning. Should probably take more, but too afraid in case it kicks stomach soreness off. I have a hiatus hernia, which in general causes no problems.

Me too Jean the hiatus hernia is a nuisance do you have any tips to make it more bearable?

I wear dresses, so that nothing presses on my stomach. Have a pair of dungarees too. Always wear bras loose, bought some extenders and also try to avoid fatty foods and vinegar. If I bend and do a lot of weeding in the garden that can upset it too. Sticking to these rules it rarely causes problems.

fairgo45 in reply to jeanjeannie50

Thanks I wondered why it's particularly bad after gardening which I love doing so no bending in future.Whats an extender?

Do you think there's an operation to cure it?

jeanjeannie50 profile image
jeanjeannie50 in reply to fairgo45

An extender makes a bra looser around the body. Marks and Spencers stock them here, don't know if you have that shop where you are, but bra extenders are easy to find with an online search.

I once had a problem with magnesium causing soreness, so now take it mid breakfast. Have you raised the head of your bed, just a few old books, or blocks of wood under the legs.

Ok I might try the magnesium in the morning, I do already sleep with several pillows but never knowingly knew it would help, your an obvious expert thank you

magnesium chloride spray taken transdermally is supposed to bypass the digestive tract , could be worth trying.

Hi

I take Magnesium glycinate 400mg at night as it always helps with sleeping as well.

Recently my husband who suffers from cramp was persuaded to try them and he hasn't had any reoccurring bouts.

I buy them from iherb Canada they are fast and cheap freight I've used them for decades

I've been taking Magnesium Taurate and Magnesium Glycinate for the past year and they seem to help a lot. I take 200 mg. of each in the morning and 200 mg. of each in the evening. You can find them very easily online or at most vitamin/health stores. Sometimes the Taurate is a bit harder to find in the stores but always available online

Rest assured that science has proven beyond doubt that all forms of oral magnesium are sufficiently well absorbed and safe to take, so the cheapest is the best. This will usually be magnesium sulphate or oxide.

The very best of all, since none of us eat sufficient fibre these days, is by increasing our vegetable and fruit intake. The magnesium that occurs naturally is the kind of magnesium the body properly was made for.

Some lucky people find that the more scientific the product sounds and the more expensive the packaging looks, the better the magnesium works, so, if your one of those, go for it with a positive mind set and hope for the best.

There's actually no single piece of properly conducted evidence that oral magnesium reduces arrhythmias - but it's safe and worth trying. Take too much and you get the runs!

I noticed recently that the magnesium supplement I had been taking for some time had sneakily changed formula - substituting malate and oxide for biglycinate and taurate. Of course they had not reduced the price nor was there any indication of the percentages of each type of magnesium. I have started a biglycinate supplement and added taurine. I have noticed a diminution in ectopics and am hoping that the time between my afib attacks will go back to as it was before ( they had become more frequent).

It fascinates me just how this or that kind of magnesium becomes the flavour of the day, given the science of it all and the nature of that particular element. And yet... if it works, it works, and that is wonderful. I just wish I could find a panacea! ;-)

Steve

Auriculaire profile image

It's not a panacea but that does not mean it has no effect. I have definitely found it decreases anxiety. I started taking it because it is recommended for floxies because Fluoroquinolones cause magnesium depletion .

There are - as you have found - reasons to take magnesium. The body has such a massive reserve of it, however, and most people do eat quite a lot of it in their diets, that it's one element that surprises me that, by taking extra, it can have a medicinal effect of some kind. The evidence has been looked for time after time in many well designed studies, but it's just not [yet] forthcoming - and yet, as you say, it works in some cases.

Hi Mrscjj,

I take both magnesium taurate and magnesium glycenate and have been taking it daily for about three months and so far ( touchwood) no upset tummy. I slowly increased from about 150mg - 350mg of magnesium and this week I started taking 400mg a day. When you get the magnesium, you will see that they do state how much is ‘elemental’ magnesium and how much is the additional taurate or whatever, and it’s the elemental magnesium that you add up throughout the day ( I do anyway).

I take my doses after breakfast (50mg taurate and 50mg glyc), lunch( the same) and then the final one at 9 - and that’s when I take the largest dose ( 150/200mg glyc) it seems to work for me. I do feel better, though I think I was and maybe still am deficient. It is worth having a blood test if you can , though the ones they give you don’t necessarily show the full picture as magnesium isn’t stored in the cells they take it from. I was low in the standard test, so I know I need to up the magnesium generally.

I buy my magnesium taurate from Bodykind - and I get the Viridian brand…they aren’t cheap, but I buy the jars of 90 capsules ( 2 caps are 112mg elemental magnesium but in my head I round it up to 100mg) and at 2 caps a day, they last a month and a half. I get my magnesium glycenate from Nutri advanced, in jars of 120. They are quite large tablets, but you can break them in half. The tablets are 100mg each of elemental magnesium

I do swallow them whole too, I just make sure they go down straight 😊

Like others, it’s a matter of trying other brands if you don’t get on with any, I have tried a couple of others in both the glycenate and taurate, but I went back to these.

Magnesium taurate is an expensive supplement. I have started buying magnesium biglycinate and taking a taurine supplement as well. This works out cheaper plus you know how much taurine you are taking.

Hi Auriculaire,

Thankyou that’s a good idea, as it is quite pricey…it’s the magnesium byglycentate I have ( they seem to call it magnesium glycenate, for short don’t they?) and I actually do have a jar of taurine capsules, as I got a bit carried away once ordering magnesium things 😳 - but I’ve never taken it due to having magnesium taurate, I wasn’t sure how much Taurine to take or what to take it with. I’d have to take another 100mg a day of the magnesium byglycenate with taurine, to make up my 350/400mg elemental magnesium, would this be ok? So I’d take taurine with that?

Thankyou,

Teresa

Auriculaire profile image
Auriculaire in reply to Teresa156

I take 500mg taurine but no idea if this is too little. It seems to be the minimum dose for most capsules.

Teresa156 profile image
Teresa156 in reply to Auriculaire

Thanks Auriculaire,I think my taurine capsules are 500mg each.

I just checked the Viridian mag taurate capsules,2 capsules provide 1500mg magnesium taurate which they say provides 112mg elemental magnesium - it all gets very complicated 😳 I remember another pack of mag taurate I had, had even more taurate per capsule so they seem to provide it in quite large amounts.

That is a very small amount of magnesium. You would need to take 6 capsules to get daily recommended amount for women.

Teresa156 profile image
Teresa156 in reply to Auriculaire

Hi Auriculaire,

Yes, that’s why I mix it with the mag glycenate- I take two capsules of the taurate ones daily, with two and a half of the mag glycenate ones, which take it up to 360 odd of magnesium. It’s been a bit of trial and error, but it seems to be working and I do take another 50 mg sometimes taking it just over 400. I’m low on magnesium anyway and after 3 months of this, I think I’m still quite low. I know some people take a lot more daily. It’s all a matter of trial and error I think.

I could take 3.5 of the mag glycenate with some taurate but to get the amount if taurine I’m used to now, I’d probably need to take 3 tabs of the taurine a day…But I’d be increasing my glycenate- I need a calculator I think! 😃

I take a brand called Tri-Mag 300, (with Mg Taurate, Mg Glycinate, Mg. Malate) which an Integrative doctor recommended. 2 capsules in am, 2 in pm. The brand is DaVinci and I order it on Fullscript where the price is pretty reasonable. Good luck, Mrscjj.
