Raised heart rate on amiodorome

I am a 72 year old woman who was very fit and healthy until two months ago I was diagnosed with paroxsymal AF. I had an ablation in January that left me with atrial flutter. Now, a few weeks later, I am on Amiodorome - really strong - 600mh a day and my heart rate us still of over 90. Any experience like this?

It's always had the opposite effect on me. That's a high dosage as well, so maybe you should talk to your cardiologist/doctor at the earliest opportunity.

You write that you're very fit. I assume that this is cardio fitness from years as a runner / cyclist / swimmer, as around 10% of us go on to develop fibrillation and, cardio exercise can cause flip flopping between fibrillation and flutter. If that's the case, your heart rate and respiration rate can go really low when you're asleep. That could be the reason that you're on amiodarone, that doesn't suit everyone (speaking from experience as I ended up hypoxic in hospital). I don't recall dronedarone and amiodarone reducing heart rate or blood pressure, and I'm pretty sure I was taking an ACE inhibitor as well.

Thanks John Boy. I was doing all those things - cycling, swimming etc until my diagnosis in lat November 2021. Now I am feeling terrible on amiodarone.....I had AF and then an ablation and it left me with atrial flutter and a high heart rate all the time..... What did you go on to when you came off amiodorone?

I was about 70 when I was put on dronedarone (and amiodarone in a hospital drip) and talked to an EP who carries out ablations, and we agreed that there was little point me having an ablation at my age. He also said that he wouldn't have one!

My current medication: Pradaxa (dabigatran) 1 x 110mg twice a day and, Ramipril 1 x 2.5mg once a day.

My blood pressure is pretty good. The medication does not control heart rate. On a Concept2 rowing machine, I have to constantly watch the PM5 monitor (linked to a Polar H10 chest strap and Polar Vantage V) as my heart rate can easily hit mid 170s after the first 2km. Since recovering from a stroke I've done 2,000km on the Concept2, so exercise is still possible.

Hi there, I had an ablation in November 2021 and it took many weeks before my HR lowered into the low 80's and then 70's. Even now at 68-70 resting, it is still higher than my usual resting.If you only had your ablation in January (this year?) you can only be a few weeks post so I think you've got a ways to go yet. It can take 3 months (even longer sometimes) for things to come back to normal after your heart has had that trauma.
