I previously had OHS twice to fix an aneurysm and developed Afib and tachycardia afterwards. Was originally on amiodarone and since a small dose of bisoprolol. That was April 2019. I've had no issues since. Recently in May had surgery again for a Cranial CSF Leak. More surgery planned for that as it still leaks. In the last 3 weeks I've developed an irregular heart rate. Shows as Afib on my watch. GP has referred me back to my Cardiologist. Their going to put me on a monitor. Meanwhile my thyroid has is swollen. One reading continues to go up. Its at 19.4?? and the other keeps dropping. GP and my ENT say it appears suppressed. Endocrinologist just told my GP to check it again in 3 months. Ive had thyroid issues for a while now but don't seem to be getting anywhere. I'm not sure what specialist I should really be pushing on this. I'm assuming any or none of my issues could be causing the heart rate issues.
Afib/Irregular heart rate.: I... - Atrial Fibrillati...
Afib/Irregular heart rate.
The thyroid can. But open heart surgery also often causes AF too.
You may get your afib sorted if they find a problem with your thyroid and fix it. But OHS can cause afib etc too unfortunately.
You need to know which thyroid readings are going up and which are coming down. If your TSH is 19.4 that is a clear sign of hypothyroidism and if there has been a continuous upward trend you should be treated not left for another 3 months .
Yes I'm sure that's the reading that's going up, and it's been going up over a period of time. Meanwhile the other reading appears suppressed according to my GP and ENT Consultant. However the Endrocologist said that because I had a CT Scan on June the 2nd that would be normal with iodine contrast. My GP never took the blood until the 9th of June to check my thyroid function. I would have thought the iodine contrast from the CT Scan would have been well out my system by then. I'm going to get my ENT Consultant to push it hopefully as she's getting me back in for surgery and I'm sure she'll want everything thoroughly checked first.
A bit more info re the thyroid. In 2015 my thyroid swelled up. It was drained at the hospital. At this point I immediately developed alopecia. I've said to Consultant's that I'm convinced the alopecia is linked to my thyroid as the both occurred at the same time. But I keep getting told they've never heard of alopecia linked to thyroid issues. But I keep finding links online. My ENT certainly said if my thyroid is off it could certainly cause afib and irregular heartrate issues.
Alopecia is a symptom in both hypo and hyperthyroidism. It is odd to refer to Free T 4 being "suppressed" . Usually this is said of TSH when it is very low. Do you not have a print out of your thyroid tests ?
Maybe I've got them round the wrong way, I only got a glance at them on screen when I was at my ENT Consultant. But one was certainly 19.4 and my other reading definitely appeared suppressed to both my Consultant and GP. Both definitely said one reading the, 19.4 , has been going up with every test and the other has been going down. Not being allowed to take my wife with me to see Consultants due to Covid restrictions means I usually forget to ask a few things when I'm in. But I've left a message with her secretary as my Consultant is off until tomorrow. Hopefully I can get a bit of clarity then.
