Admittted to hospital after a horrendous nose bled in the night which we couldn’t control So ambulance to A&E - scary thing I’ve no memory of what happened until on ward. Brain scan ok. Anyone had anything like this. Need anticoagulant but this episode has made me lose confidence

Obviously not a pleasant experience, is it possible that you accidentally double dosed? Blood vessels in the nose are extremely sensitive, it is the hay fever season so maybe sneezing may be the culprit. You were so wise to get it checked out, good to hear that it wasn’t more serious.

Did the hospital indicate to you whether or not anticoagulation was a factor?
I can empathise with your concerns and maybe you could talk to your doctor as anticoagulation is important for us AF’ers. I don’t believe it to be a common occurrence out of all of the posts on this forum I have seen the odd few, but exception rather than the rule.
How long after you took your Rivaroxaban did the bleed start? Rivaroxaban is at it’s most efficacious about 2-3 hours after investing.
I take Apixaban because it is x2 daily - meaning it has a shorter half life - maybe that would be worth considering?

Back in the day when first diagnosed ( Jan 2010 ) my meds for AF were Bisoprolol and Warfarin which were prescribed at that time by the hospital cardiologist. After some 8 to 10 weeks I went back to work and life resumed. Then one day my daytime nosebleeds started at work ( bus driver). At first I blamed Warfarin and researched it. I then came to the view it was nothing to do with the anticoagulant - Warfarin but the Bisoprolol.
The hospital cardiologist prescribed it to be taken in the morning ( breakfast). So, I went and gave my GP an ear bashing and she then said take the Bisoprolol at night. I did as I was told and the nosebleeds stopped and they have never returned. I have taken Bisoprolol at night ever since with absolutely no issues.
So, the point of this long winded comment is, don't look for an obvious cause. If you are on a wider range of drugs for AF or anything else you may have, then it may be wise to research ( with or without your GP ) and look at the other drugs and the time of day you are taking them and any interactions with Riveroxiban .... or any other NOAC for that matter. I mean it may just be this anticoagulant just doesn't work for you. Maybe you need to try another NOAC.
I have to say my nosebleeds were able to be controlled and I never ended up having your experience. I wish you well with this.

Thank you everyone for your experiences. I am on Flecainide & Bisoprolol as well as Rivaroxiban None of the drugs have changed dose recently & ive been on them for several years so it seems strange. The most worrying thing is my complete lack of memory about the incident at home, a&e & brain scan - normal - didn’t really get back to normal until on ward so 7 hours plus no recollection - never had a memory loss like that - I understand my BP was high & it’s not normally - no meds for it. Quite a shock to my confidence I can tell you. Thanks for responding.
CDreamer has put the link to my post after I had a dreadful nosebleed last year. I feel for you, it is a most terrifying experience! Did you have one of those things like a tampon shoved up your nose? When I just sat and cried the next day a nurse on the ward said she's seen grown men cry afterwards.
It truly was one of the most traumatic moments of my life. Would rather give birth to my two babies again than go through that.
I take Warfarin and think stress takes our blood pressure high and makes the bleeding worse.

Thank you Jean - I’m ok just tired. I don’t know how they treated me as I can’t remember a thing -- because of covid my husband couldn’t come so we’ve only exchanged text - he did say our bedroom was like a war zone but I’m told I got very upset & disoriented which probably made things worse & sent my BP sky high. Waiting for Drs rounds so will see what is said & if I can go home.
I was swapped from Rivaroxaban to Apixaban as it splits the dose with 2 tablets 12 hours apart instead of one. I was nearly hospitalised with anaemia due to about 6 months of having to take them at that time of the month. After arguing the toss with the cardiologist of the time, the anaemia finally persuaded him to let me come off them for 1 week each month.
