Had a Zoom consultation this morning with a consultant from Barts. I was of the view that I might be going on to flecanide with beta blockers .However, he suggested a Cryo Ablation as the best option. Anyone had that procedure please ,

Personally no as all my ablations have been RF (Radio-frequency) . Cryo ablations are generally the first line attempt and Barts under Professior Richard Schilling were pioneers in the field in UK Success rates are good if simple AF is all you have but if there are more complex things going on (which nobody knows till they look inside) , then you may need a second RF ablation at a later date.

If you go to AF Association website there is an excellent booklet you can download about all aspects of ablation and the two fact sheets mentioned below were produced to help patients before and after ablation understand why or how they feel and what to expect.

I had a cryo ablation one year ago. I was in and out of the hospital the same day. One year later and no AF episodes that I'm aware of. A few weeks ago my EP took me off Sotolol and I had intermittent palps (lasting a 1-2 seconds) but even that eventually faded away. I ride my bike 5-10 miles every day. For me the ablation was successful. I'd be happy to answer any other questions you might have. Good luck.

Wonderful. What about the actual procedure. Did you have local anaesthetic etc?

I had a general anesthetic. The operation was done in 4 hours. They kept me a couple of more hours for observation then I was sent home. No heavy lifting for several days, etc. I live in the states and had my operation in early March 2020 just before the national lockdowns began. Today I feel fine, riding my bike 5-10 miles a day through the neighborhood.

I'm waiting for my cryo ablation with Dr Sporton at St Barts. How did your ablation go?

Hello Kalgs, I would be encouraged that they are looking at doing the procedure rather than relying on drugs. Apparently Flecainide is a powerful drug & like all powerful drugs - my automatic instinct is to avoid them if at all possible. Ps I’ve been on Flec for around 7months and cope ok but I am just trying to get through this Covid crisis in SR before arranging an ablation. Full time work & trying to arrange a couple of cardioversions (even private) proved very difficult out here in West Wales last year. I too was thinking The Duke may have had a similar procedure.

Best wishes. Steve

I had cryo ablation done about six months ago and its best thing I ever did I wish I had done it sooner and I'm off the flecainide and Eliquis been doing great. My doctor did the whole procedure fast in about an hour and 15 mins under general anesthetic.
