Good morning all,

Is it safe to take cod liver oil tablets (1000mg per day) with Pradaxa?

John

I used to think yes, I’m now rethinking so I’ve stopped taking any fish oils - never did use Cod Liver because there are omegas 6 in it, as there is some evidence that it will enhance the affect of A/Cs whilst offering little or no benefit for the heart. See Prof Spector’s views on this.

It’s something else which provides huge area of debate with little or no available data or opposing data to definitaly indicate yeah or nay. Nay to do no harm.

I asked this question a few years back of my cardiologist - the answer didn't really enlighten me much, other than 'no evidence'. To be on the safe side, I reduced my dose from 1000mg to 550. I take Apixaban.

If you Google pradaxa and fish oil there are several ( usa based ) websites saying speak to your doctor. However if you check the pradaxa leaflet fish oil is not mentioned, although St John's wort is. So check your leaflet in case it has been updated from what I have and I would not be concerned at taking it if it was not.I am pretty sure i did not stop taking fish oil when I took pradaxa. I used to do cod liver oil one day and omega 3 the next, and still take cod liver oil daily.

I was only taking Pradaxa 5.5 months from a month before my ablation until after my post procedure review.

Taking high doses of cod liver oil can mean getting too much vit A as the proportion of that to vit D is high. Also as CD says there are omega 6 fatty acids in it. Most of the so called blood thinning natural products are anti aggregant (ie stop platelet clumping) rather than anticoagulant and there seems to be little info about how much you can safely take alongside anticoagulants. I take 1000mg omega 3 fish oils a day but then I have for many years before going on Apixaban. I did not want to stop as I think there are benefits for joints and mine need all the help they can get!

I have never taken cod liver oil(well as a child in the 40-50's the daily dollop of goodies) I take Emu Oil capsules omega 3,6 & 9 and have done for over twenty years, same as Auriculaire for joint problems, not for heart health. I have had arthritis for many years and taking these capsules is the only thing that helps with controlling the stiffness in my joints.I have been on Rivaroxaban for 6 years and I am aware that there is some concern about taking both. I enquired of my GP and chemist neither would say yes or no, just there is no proven evidence. Looked online and again no definite answers.

So as I have taken them for so long I have decided that I will continue to take both.

Hi John, can't help you there, A I don't know

B because of the cost of the drug they took me off pradaxa and put me on edoxaban 60mg once a day instead of 2 high doses a day of pradaxa.

Stay safe

Philip
