Tooth extraction on Edoxaban, just before Xmas : (

OK..... I may have to have a back tooth taken out on the 23rd. Dentist can't see me until then, but is warning me in advance!

She has said don't take Edoxaban on that morning. Last time I had an extraction, I was still on Warfarin and the socket wouldn't stop bleeding later in the day and I ended up having to go back and have it stitched.

So anyone else, had tooth extraction, while taking Edoxaban, please? Seeking reassurance and advice, especially as it will be so close to Xmas shutdown.....thanks!

Aw misery for you Wightbaby. I have had two big bruutes taken out but I'm on Apixaban which I didn't stop. I imagine one DOAC is very much like the others and bleeding or not is an individual thing. Neither socket bled and interestingly the top brute was packed with haemostatic gauze and stitched but the lower one was left alone. Perhaps gravity plays a part in the upper jaw?

It might be a good idea to remind your dentist of your previous experience with bleeding and ask if she can minimize the risk for you. Very best wishes - I hope it goes well and doesn't spoil Christmas for you. xx

Thank you.....I think Apixaban and Edoxaban are very similar. I certainly don't bruise like I did when I used to take warfarin, so that is a good sign, I guess

Hi WB - that’s tough luck so wishing you all the best. As you know I’m on Apixaban so pretty similar I guess. Back in 2017 I had a tooth extracted (bottom right) at St Mary’s and the advice was the same - leave out the morning dose. About a week later I think I had to have stitches, although in all fairness it was a large socket. Despite what I think is good dental hygiene I do get quite a few gum bleeds, especially at night, but the nurse who monitors my anticoagulant regime says that’s very common with Apixaban and not to worry as all other indicators are ok.Hope all goes well and that you can enjoy Christmas.

Hi, I take Apixaban, and have had tooth extractions and implants put in without stopping medication, no problems with bleeding.

Hi Wightbaby. I am probably an extreme case (!) as I bled a lot from my last two upper jaw extractions. I was better prepared for the second one having conversed with the Cardiologist. In summary I was told by the Cardiologist to stop my Apixaban on the morning of the extraction plus the two doses on the previous day. I was stitched and when my evening dose was due I was still bleeding and so I did not take it. I stopped bleeding at about 5 a.m. and decided as a precaution not to take the morning dose. Fortunately the Cardiologist contacted me during the day and confirmed my actions and advised me not to take the next dose as well. He has since given me a letter to give to Dentists regarding stopping Apixaban for any future extractions (hopefully none!). TerryW
