Catheter caused problems post ablation.

I was wondering whether anyone had a catheter inserted during their AFib/Flutter ablation? My Flutter surgery lasted for 6.5 hours and the catheter hurt like crazy coming out. 5 weeks down the track I am still frequently urinating and feel some discomfort. I have been checked for a UTI. I would be devastated if I now have another health problem to overcome. ......has anyone experienced something similar?

Yes it can often be a problem it certainly happened to me.

If you are still having a problem speak to your doctor who will probably prescribe antibiotics.

Wore one for a month after prostate surgery and it took quite a while to get back to "normal". I don't actually see why they have to do this for an ablation anyway. When I had my last one, even though I have some residual incontinence they just lay me on a puppy pad. Simples.

I have a phobia and cannot pee in a bottle.

I certainly would not be at all comfortable on a puppy Mat as you call it.

For me for all the side issues a urinary catheter is unfortunately the only option.

Oh how I wish this was not the case.

Looking on the bright side it is now 7 months since I have had an episode of AF.

I had one installed immediately after giving birth to my first son. It was not needed but was on their routine check list. The pain was appalling - I thought I'd been electrocuted. I subsequently had retention problems.

I had one installed after an operation about 3 years ago. I was anaethetised during insertion and had no subsequent problems.

My ablation lasted just over 3 hours, and then was required to lay flat on my back for another 6 hours, so, yes I had a catheter. But I had no problems, other than a bit of soreness the first time I had to pee after it’s removal.

It was the worst part about having my ablation under GA.

Can't remember exactly the time scale but it did take several weeks before I felt normal again
