Apixaban.

I have been taking Warfarin for about 2 years now since I was diagnosed with AF. I wanted to take Apixaban , as I have Coeliac the doctor said it was not suitable for me. Anyone on here taking Apixaban and have Coeliac ? I don't want to be going out if I can help it. My age is 76 so I should be staying in more. Sometimes I can have a few weeks in between appointments. Quite often I have to go back every week. It means going into town . I'm trying to avoid that with the virus . Any advice would be welcome.

I'm on warfarin too and have been considering buying my own machine to measure my blood levels myself, have dithered about it for years. However fear of catching this coronavirus at the docs may just be the push I need to do it. Have you considered doing the same? Cost is about £200.

I have thought about it Jean . I hope I could use it properly .There are plenty of people on here that would advise me if I wasn't sure.

If your funds can stretch to a Coaguchek, I would thoroughly recommend one. At the best of times it set me free, never mind now. I bought direct from Roche

and also the testing strips

I have checked and although those are available elsewhere from other suppliers and online pharmacies can be considerably more expensive. No VAT is charged if you are a warfarin user.

I check every two weeks and keep myself within range with very little problems. PM me if you would like more help.

PS For jeanjeannie50 too, I have checked and stocks aren't available until next month, so if you are in a position to order may be an idea to do it now. Price is now £299 I'm afraid.

Just looked to order, but they're out of stock!!! Typical me, always too late!

I used to get mine from the doctor, they were happy to provide them for free. Moved over to edoxaban, thinking about selling the Coaguchek, but no idea how to go about it...

I am not medically trained but that sounds very odd. It’s not your doctor trying to save money is it? I would question him as to why being Coeliac prevents you from having Apixaban, or indeed any of the other anticoagulants that don’t need regular testing.

I’ve been doing my own tests with Coaguchek machine for 3 yrs I wouldn’t look back very easy to learn only a finger prick test, Coaguchek train you and although it’s £299 they do have an interest free Payment plan.

Some doctors will try to keep you on Warfarin because it is slightly less expensive. I would contact your heart CONSULTANT and say you want Apixaban if suitable so there is no need to attend public places. If it is not suitable, you are entitled to know the reason why not.

The price differential is actually more than just slightly different, with Warfarin costing £1.20 for a month’s supply whereas Apixaban costs £26.60 for a month’s supply. Having said that, there are additional costs associated with Warfarin that have to be factored in i.e. the test strips, the testing machine, plus the cost of the practitioner’s time.
