How long do I need to stop Eliquis before eye surgery

I am thinking of having surgery on my eyes for Ectropion lower eye lid problem. I was told I would have to stop my Eliquis for 6 days before and two days after surgery. these seem long to me. I would like to know what is a reasonable time to go without the drug.

That answer varies according to the surgery and physician. I cant remember how long I had to stop my anticoaguant before my knee surgery but pretty sure I held it 3-4 days following as there was risk of bleeding in to joint. I did fine.

Check out the Pinned Post, “Useful links for Newbies and Oldies”. You will find easy access to a lot of information which should help you. In the UK, Eliquis is known as Apixaban and there is a section on preparing for surgery but the information is UK based. Maybe you should also talk to your heart doctor.

All I can say is that I have had operations and dental work and have been told only to stop on the morning of the event however as Hoski says it may depend upon the type of operation so I would ask your heart doctor as I found in the early days of DOACs many general medics were used to Warfarin but not the protocols of the DOACs and all the advice & literature were based upon Wafarin.

Always pays to double check.

The longest I have been told to stop apixaban (Eliquis) was 3 full days before my total Knee Replacement. Other procedures have varied between not taking on the morning of dental work a full 24 hours before colonoscopy and 48 hours before colonoscopy when taking biospies and removing polyps. It is best to check with your surgeon and check with your cardiologist or cardiology nurse. Each time I went back onto anticoagulants within 6 to 12 hours of the surgery/procedure. After my knee operation I went back on a lower dose for a month.
