Bisoprolol withdrawal symptoms

Hi,

I was prescribed bisoprolol 2.5mg for SVT 6 months ago. Dose increased to 5mg in December due to another SVT attack. Side effects have been horrendous so have reduced dose over 2 months and finally took last one 4 days ago. Have since been having quite horrible feelings of anxiety , nausea, tingling to hands, feet and face. Just wondered if anyone had gone throu this and how long the withdrawal lasts. Thanks in advance

Hi - Bisoprolol is also an adrenaline blocker & used to treat anxiety so - yes you may be suffering withdrawal symptoms. May I suggest you practise some breathing exercises Inhale 4, hold, try slow your breath out, hold - repeat. If you can really control your breath - breathing slowly & deep into the belly it may help lessen the symptoms.

If symptoms get worse or don’t lessen within a few days - go to see your GP.

Hi, thank you for your response. I'm a mental health nurse so try and practice breathing etc as i teach my patients. Not always successful for me thou 😢. I knew there would be some withdrawal due to the side effects I've already suffered but just not sure of duration. Really hope it doesn't last long. Thankfully I'm not at work this week so not impacting on another area of my life. Worst 6 months ever.

You don’t realise the horrific affects of drugs do you? - until you have these experiences.

I just wish some of the doctors who prescribe these drugs took them so they might realise that sometimes the ‘Medicine’ is worse than the disease! I have a red alert on my medical file never to be given Beta Blockers! I was on Biso for several years, against my better judgement & my experience was not good either!

Have you worked with calming ANS? I found things like switching hot/cold showers help - 20 secs cold water 10 secs hot. Cold water swimming

I was prescribed the bisoprolol after only a couple of episodes of SVT so when I see my cardiologist in march I'll definitely be asking for alternative treatment. I'm hoping for an acute treatment rather than preventative as have no other symptoms and echo gram was normal. I just feel like I've been misguided

It’s sometimes difficult to know what is best but I read so many posts about problems with Bisoprolol.

Hope you find something that helps.

Thank you. Fingers crossed. Think I'll just stand my ground in future.

Hi

I have been withdrawing from 2.5mgs Bisoprolol since December 25th and still only down to 1.75mgs. The withdrawal from these put me in hospital for three days over new year with suspected stroke needless to say it was the biso withdrawal. I am only reducing bu 0.01 a week as I am suffering tremendous anxiety and insomnia. The doctors have given me diazepam and want me to start on sertraline but then I would have to withdraw from these.

I have heard that the rebound from stopping Bisoprolol can last up to three months especially the anxiety. I also get the tingling in face, tongue, hands, feet and mouth (not nice).

I hope you get better soon and by not taking biso any more you will definitely see light at the end of the tunnel. Just persevere and take one day at a time and you should soon be getting more good days than bad.

Thank you for your reply. I'm determined to keep going and stay off BB's. They really don't suit me at all. Hoping I can have an acute medication treatment rather than preventative. It's pretty much taken over my life for past 6 months, never felt so unwell. I would agree and say to you don't accept the diazepam as that alone brings its own issues. I hope you can start to feel better soon, it's awful to go throu. Thank you for letting me know its not just me thou as I think others often aren't aware of the side effects.

Sorry to hear you are struggling with these symptoms. I was on 6.25mg of Bisoprolol until 3rd Feb. I'd been on a 5mg dose for over 3 years prior. I had an svt ablation on the 9th Feb and have been advised to now stop taking them. It's hard to know if my symptoms are post procedure or withdrawal. Have you spoken with your GP or consultant?

I've got a routine gp review next week so hoping that I'll be feeling a little better by then. Each day appears a bit better. Got quite a few random, heavy beats going on today but BP and pulse stable so plodding on. Hope you are feeling better soon, I should imagine you have a bit of everything going on. Withdrawal and also recovery but if you are unsure seek medical advice

Withdrawal from Bisoprolol is longer than you may think, probably around 12 days to be sufficiently out of your system, but then your body needs adjust (your receptors become more sensitive and need to normalise) and I really don't know how long that takes - it may be different for each of us.

Thanks. Feel a little better each day so hopefully by next week this toxin will be gone for good

I've reduced my bisoprolol from 3.75 mg to near enough nothing in 3 years. I've not taken any for 3 weeks. It's hard to say what withdrawal symptoms I'm getting, I get back pains. a bit of itching and occasional sweats at night but these could be due to other things, I had flu a few weeks ago. So I'm not really sure, I've got normal blood pressure.so I'm coming to the conclusion I've been wasting my time taking the drug in the first place. I will probobly use it as an when needed I guess.

Hi there

I contacted the company that makes Bisoprolol and have had a reply today asking me symptoms and withdrawal effects of Bisoprolol. I have posted back my reply and asked them to let me know what they think. If more people contacted the drug company making the medication Regarding withdrawal and side effects eventually they have got to take notice.

So just got back from gp. Still feeling awful on day 8 without bisoproplol! Gp didn't really seem to acknowledge any of my side effects being anything to do with bisoprolol and said its out of your system within 2 days (I beg to differ). His plan was to px me more regular meds, including an ssri anti depressant. No thanks to both. He's given me a week course of diazepam 2mg twice daily to see how I get on. At this point I'm willing to try but I'm only going to try 1mg to start as otherwise I'll have same issues withdrawing that! Cardiologist in two weeks. Fingers crossed 🤞 for an outcome then.

12 days post bisoprolol and finally starting to feel like me again. Apart from horrible headaches I think most withdrawal effects are now passed. It's been an awful 6 months but feeling positive with a perfect BP of 122/78 this evening. Cardiology next week with lots of unanswered questions.
