I am withdrawing from Bisoprolol but does anyone know how to cut the tablet into quarters without it turning to dust. Also has anyone had flutters and Palpatations on slow withdrawal

Assuming that you are stopping on your doctor’s instructions, try seeing if you pharmacist can provide you with a selection of smaller dose tablets. I think the lowest dose is 1.25mg and it might not necessary to reduce on that but I think “pill splitters” are available which might help.

Thank you for you reply I will ask my doctor if I can have a prescription for 1.25 tablets

Thank you for your reply. The consultant wanted me to reduce quicker than I am doing but the side effects were so bad that my own GP says I can shave them down but this is not very accurate. I will ask my GP for 1.25 tabs but I am only down to 2 mags at the moment

The only pills appropriate for splitting are those with a score line - sometimes one when you can split in half and 2 when you can quarter them. If it doesn’t have score lines you can bet that they will just dissolve into dust and that will because of the fillers used to bind the active ingredients.

Even with pill splitters they will dissolve into dust without score lines whereas if a pill can be split you can usually split with your hand.

Thank you for you reply the tablet does have a score but we have tried splitting and a lot goes to dust

While you wait for the new tabs..how about crushing the tabs you have completely, than dividing the dust in two...eat with a spoon of yoghurt?

Never thought of that thanks will try.

Yes buy a £2 pill cutter from your local supermarket. They do the job perfectly, I used

one when withdrawing from bisoprolol some time ago. Good luck.

I had been on 3.75mg bisoprolol then half then quartered it and after about 3 months gradually nothing. I actually used electrical wire cutters. I'm hoping to use as an when I need them,at the moment , apart from a slight increase in heart rate, I havnt noticed much differance. Maybe sleep is a fraction better.

in reply to

Than you for you info will try wire cutters. I am pleased you have not had any withdrawal symptoms How long had you been taking Bisoprolol and how long since you stopped?

in reply to

Since April 2009 I was on 2.5mg. It was upped to 3.75 3 years ago.. Since when I've reduced it to 0 Over that period. I havnt taken any since Christmas. If I get a sudden AF episode I will no doubt take 1. The main differance now is warmer feet and hands and slight increase in heart rate, but other than that not a great deal of change actually.

in reply to

Thanks for the info. I had only been on 2.5mgs for 3 months when I started to reduce at Christmas this year. Was rushed into hospital on New Year’s Day with a suspected stroke. Fortunately after 3 days they decided it was the Bisoprolol withdrawal. I am now reducing ver6 very slowly but still getting withdrawal symptoms.

I am so glad you are feeling better and haven’t had withdrawal symptoms. I have been told it could take another 3 to 4 months to come out of your system after you have stopped the tablet altogether.

Good luck and thanks for your support.
