Anxious and Scared- Possible Heart Failure and Afib

I had my fourth episode of Afib last week and had a cardioversion and am in NSR. For that I am grateful. The did the BNP blood test and it was super high so the hospitalist diagnosed me with congestive heart failure. This test was elevated last time I had an episode but my cardiologist and family doctor said and afib episode can cause that to be high. Does anyone know if that is true. Also, is it safe to take SSRIs like Zoloft or Prozac when you have these conditions? Thank you!

Hi HIH,

I think if your cardio and doctor BOTH said a-fib can cause it to be high then there's your answer ;-)

Unfortunately worry and stress about things seem to go hand in hand with afib - part and parcel of it I'm sorry to say. It's brilliant news you are back in sinus after your CV. No one can say how long it will last but enjoy the moment and your stress will pass soon enough.

The very fact that you are back in sinus shows treatment can work for you. That's very encouraging news and can give you further options for treatment if needs must.

I can't help you regarding SSRIs. This is something you need to discuss with your doctor.

Try to relax as much as you can and I'm sure you'll soon feel back to your old self ;-) The 'worry moments' do pass I can assure you.

Paul

Yes I was also worried about an elevated bnp but it eventually returned to normal. I have taken Zoloft for the past two years with no problem. You just have to check about any interaction with your other meds.

My husband had a raised BNP I think 1100 and when we finally saw his cardiologist I asked about significance and he said it muddies the waters in those in AF as this alone can raise it.
