I was sitting reading and felt light headed so a call to 999 Trip to A&E and ECG pulse of 205 strangely blood pressure was fine and has remained so, blood test on a drip,, so after much consultation with a consultant and pills I have Atrial Flutter, which seems to have sorted it’s self out have to go for an Echo scan in a week, have been prescribed Bisoprolol anti coagulation and although my Cholesterol is 4.1 a low dose of statin. So awaiting the scan results it’s all very sudden and comes a quite a shock

I see that you joined this forum a few years ago, so guess you may have had AF problems before your flutter episode?

I have to say I find it strange that you have been put on statins when your cholesterol level is only 4.1. I think mine would have to be over 7 before I'd perhaps consider taking them, but then you may have other medical conditions that you haven't mentioned here. My opinion is probably because I knew someone who had dreadful leg pains caused by them. He'd had stents fitted to his heart, so felt obliged to keep taking them and tried several different brands

Its good that you're going to have an echo scan, we all seem to have them as a matter of routine and most results are normal. Some of us as we age can have slightly leaky valves, but usually that is of no concern. Let us know your results please.

Hi ironically I joined the site for something else and appeared to have joined them all at that time. So this morning pulse is 54 and steady BP 111/68. Feel shakey is this the Bisoprolol? They did have reduce the dose form 5mg to 3mg as pulse went to 42 and made me very light headed. As for the Statin I did question my GP he was very keen as according to him long term it protects the heart. So far no side effects

A pulse of 54 is not excessively low in general, but it could be having an effect on you. I would contact your GP tomorrow and let him know how you're feeling and ask if you should reduce the bisoprolol a little more. Also some people split the dose and have half in the morning and half at night. Or they take it at night, before bed, so that the strongest effects of it have worn off a little by morning .

Did you know that doctors get paid for every drug they prescribe?

I was told that statins lower inflammation, but my understanding is that a very healthy diet can do the same thing!

Hi jean. Echo Scan done results are in nothing to report. Mitral valve is showing trivial regurgitation. Spoke to GP reduced dose of Bisopropol have since had a meeting and when I return from our trip in a month. we plan to come off Bisopropol and start a calcium blocker. No P-AF since the initial episode. Few ectopics but not bothering. Staying on Statin as no side effects and benefits outweigh the risks. Still on Anticoagulant. I’ve done as I was told cut down the Alcohol. Coffee. And watch the Salbutamol the combination of the three seems to have caused the problem in the first place.

My echo scan showed a leaky mitral valve and I was told that's normal as we age and not a problem.

Good to hear you're doing well. Long may that continue and have a good trip.

Not a pleasant experience at all. The good news is that the beta blocker will slow your heartrate if you have another bout and possibly reduce the very high rate you experienced to something like 110/120bpm.

The better news is that AFlutter is much more straightforward to ablate and has a high success rate - around 96-98%.

It’s good that you are anticoagulated as Flutter carries the same stroke risk as AF.

No it wasn’t my first choice for an evening out. But on the up side I stoped drinking beer and eating rubbish and lost a stone

Hi,

Just diagnosed with Atrial flutter and ablation recommended. I have read that A-fib can often develop after. I’m 53 and to me this sounds quite a frightening possibility - how has this affected you please?

Hi,

I am facing an ablation for persistent atrial flutter and my concern was developing A-Fib following the ablation. What is it like to live with A-Fib? Does it restrict you at all? I’m 53 and feel like I’m 90 at the moment!!

Bisopropol is well known for it's side effects. Of course, it does not apply to everyone. Speak to your medical team.
