Hi all, went on a well deserved holiday to celebrate my successful ablation and my husband’s stent success along with his operation to take out his cancerous kidney and guess what fell and broke my hip!!!! Just had replacement in Tenerife in the most dreadful hospital you could imagine. Just got home

Oh Lordy what awful bad luck. Good you are home safely. Sorry the hospital was not up to the usual standards (we were very lucky in Lanzarote though no op involved)

Do hope you have an uneventful convalescence

How absolutely awful for you. Hope this wasn't at the beginning of your hols ??😕

Can I ask what insurance company you used ?

I've invariably had to pay pretty hefty premiums. I was hoping that as my AF seems to be taking a long holiday and I'm no longer hypertensive I would get a better deal. However husband just been diagnosed with Parkinsons.....probably will cancel out any savings there !

MydogBrandy in reply toJalia

Hi Jalia was on 6th day of 7 day holiday and spent another 12 days in hospital. My son is dealing with all paperwork and isn’t here at mo but one good tip we were told was that countries like Tenerife seem to prefer Bank holiday insurance, ie Barclays , Santander Nat west etc. And can refuse small independents. Luckily our insurance company were great but the private hospital was not. £250 before entering door and then £20,000 euro deposit from insurance company before any pain relief given. No pain relief given in ambulance or blood pressure heart monitoring etc taken.it was a private hospital but I have come out with bed pressure sores along with my new hip. NHS gets 10 stars compared to this private hospital x

Jalia in reply toMydogBrandy

Sounds horrific. I do like to use well known insurance companies like Allclear as a rule and have had no problem when we've had to make a last minute cancellation . Have not had to test an experience in foreign hospital though !

MydogBrandy profile image
MydogBrandy in reply toJalia

Sorry but this was the worst experience ever, I had to go into an Austrian hospital with heart problems a few years ago and that was definitely 5 star and not private, be prepared to read everything in your policy, I have been really lucky there. X

100% better just to be in my own bed ..... no nastiness if I want to use loo. No shovel like plastic bed pan shoved under me causing skin to bleed and then demanded that I wear pampas although I could with help reach the toilet.x

What an absolute nightmare. I always thought that Spain was good for healthcare.

I seem to remember though, many years ago an aunt of mine was taken ill whilst holidaying in one of the Costas and had a terrible experience in a hospital there topped off with her handbag being stolen from her room.

Omg, think I’ll stick to visiting Austria which s where I was born and know the healthcare is 5 star xx

It's one thing after another isn't it!! Do you feel that a good job has been done on your hip replacement, or is it too early to say?

MydogBrandy profile image
MydogBrandy in reply tojeanjeannie50

Hiya, nurse and doctor say that the wound itself looks good and it’s good that they used titanium which is supposed to be the best, feel very out of control at moment which is upsetting, I said to my son I thought only old people that fell broke their hip, his answer well Mum you are old, this is my son’s way of bringing a smile to my face. I am hoping that I feel better tomorrow after the staples have been taken out which I am not looking forward to. So will let you know xx

How bloody awful, I do know how you feel, had a bad experience in lanzarote in July after going into flutter and being cardioverted, they have a unique way of making you feel like a worthless money pawn .Sure you will be OK now your home the feeling of relief is immeasurable and there really is nothing like that feeling of being in your own bed after an experience like this . Nothing like home comforts and our flawed, but sure health service, least you can communicate at least, but now hopefully you can put this all behind you, and it becomes a distant memory for you very quickly . Spoil yourself now and loads of treats and home comforts will blast away the bad memories, take care of yourself.

Ianp66 we had amazing treatment at Hospiten ( private hosp) in Lanzarote. Ins company wanted my OH to be moved to Arrecife hosp but as he was hopefully to be discharged next day they did not insist. Underwriters were slow but Hospiten chased it all on our behalf. We did have to pay 2000 euros but got it back and consultant did ecg, echo and 24 hour holter herself as it was a Sunday.

Thanks so much Ian, you are so right, it was like a transit van that they called an ambulance that picked me up. My son had to sit in the front, no one could come in the back with me, my husband had to follow in a taxi.no pain relief, no equipment in van, when I screamed in pain at a bump in the road my son slid the cab window open to say” don’t worry Mum, nearly there I’m here. “ at that the driver slammed his brakes on ant told him to get out and get a taxi, he refused and said he was going nowhere without me, bless him. The driver then got paid at the door of the hospital??????? Yes definitely glad to be home thanks xx

Had exactly the same thing, they refused to let my 15yr old son who I was with on my own travel with me to the main hospital when they moved me , drove like keystone cops, and near tipped me out of the ambulance on arrival , luckily the private doctors whom I was at initially called him a taxi but let him travel alone trying to catch the speeding ambulance .When arriving at the Main hospital though the doctors were ambivalent, bordering rude, wouldn't call my EP even though I gave them details, in fact became awkward at that suggestion saying "we do cardioversion every day to English it's like a conveyor belt", very reassuring, not !, when my son arrived they weren't any better , luckily he is very mature and able to communicate but they wouldn't let him in or see me , they only allowed him through when I became agitated about him being left alone outside.

Seemed more concerned about getting forms signed and the EHIC card then treating me I felt, money driven unlike UK treatment given to any nationality it seems .

I bet its such a relief being home it was for me, itl be like I was you will feel so much better being home be better in no time.

You rest and enjoy home am sure it will feel like heaven when compared to your ordeal,.. Ian xx

Thanks so much, it’s not just me then? It sounds like they are rude to everyone! They even brought a lady in who was sick on take off and they had to abort the flight, decided she had sickness bug, with dierhea(spelt wrong lol) and put her in next bed to me........ not in isolation.

You poor sausage! Such a painful injury & no pain relief without money up front - shame on them!

Make sure you get a referral to a physio ASAP & to Orthopaedics for follow-up please.

All the very best for your recovery.

Just writing ...as an old nurse ...to say I am really appalled. So sorry for you. It will take a bit of time for you to feel emotionally better after that. I do hope now you are home that you will make a good recovery in every way.

MydogBrandy profile image
MydogBrandy in reply toMouchkin

I agree, I used to be just an auxiliary in the 70’s and we always checked for pressure spots etc. The Bed pans in Tenerife were like plastic shovels so scraped the skin when shoved under. I know I will definitely not be going back to Tenerife and the insurance have paid for everything but I am going to write my letters of complaint so that it might help others in the future.x

Oh goodness. I'm so sorry to hear about that. Hope the accident with the hip didn't make your heart go doing acrobats again. Hope the hip heals quickly and not too painful. Best wishes. Pat

PS...When I had my seizure in Majorca which turned out to be a brain tumour the hospital there was brilliant. I'm so sorry you had such an awful time.

So sorry this happened to you and I am full of admiration that you have retained your sense of humour in spite of everything. Your 'ambulance' journey sounds absolutely horrendous plus the general neglect at the hospital, you must be so glad to be home.

I was so interested in what happened to you I did a bit of searching and apparently in Tenerife lots of people have been shunted off to private hospitals where the costs are extortionate, and not all of them get good reviews. When you feel up to it, I would urge you to put a review online about this hospital; I review just about everything and reaction from others is very positive.

We live in rural Andalusia about five months of the year and the care our friends (who live here permanently) receive from the public health system is hard to beat. I don't think there is a even a private hospital near us.

I hope you recover well - best wishes.

Thank you so much I will definitely do the review. Got a nice surprise family have bought me a push along to get to toilet which I have named Ziggy🤣xx

Sorry - this isn’t to rub salt in the wound (literally) but we have just visited the local clinic, about 8 kilometres away. My husband has some sort of horrible bug and could hardly breathe last night, he is asthmatic to boot. So walk-in, 1/2 hour wait, then doctor immediately gave him corticosteroid injection, nebuliser for 1/2 hour and prescription for three drugs. Our EHIC cards are out-of-date but he was just waved him through. This isn’t a tourist area so can only assume that this makes a difference in attitude.

Now don’t you go speeding on your push- along!

MydogBrandy profile image
MydogBrandy

Glad your hubby is o.k. Perhaps you are right.

Hey the push along has even got a shopping basket so my Colin is planning a list for the local coop lol, only joking kids have been great fetching and carrying for us, Colin has his scan in a couple of weeks so we are hoping for some good news. Thanks for caring, which part of the country do you live? Xx

irene75359 profile image
irene75359 in reply toMydogBrandy

We are about 125km north-east from Granada.

The village where the clinic is is Castril (just over 2000 inhabitants). It is a very sparsely populated area and the main source of income for the locals are almonds and olives. It is a world away from tourist resorts but we love it.

I really hope that everything goes well with Colin's scan, you both have had such a tough time. So glad you have a supportive family.

Hi, wow sounds amazing, we live about 12 km from where all the floods are, which has hit the television news. Luckily our house is undamaged, we were worried because we have a stream at the bottom of the garden area. So many people are distraught because of all the mess, mud and water that has entered their homes.

Thanks for the wishes for Colin, he has been a gem. Xx will keep you up to date 👍x

Thanks so much, not feeling too great can’t understand why I keep getting yellow diarrhoea , sorry if anyone is eating. Lost my appetite, been to local hospital yesterday for X-ray and they say it has been put in right so that’s good. The physio was so painful though. Feeling really down at moment, cNt believe three weeks ago was looking forward to a holiday of a lifetime with my family to create happy memories. X
