I have a permanently irregular heart beat so I reckon Everest base camp is out of order and Austria/Switzerland will be a bit on the chilly side. Any thoughts?

75 in February and looking for walking holiday recommendations?

Thanks for the reply, Somewhere around 6-8 miles, flattish or reasonable gradients, here or abroad, not too cold, fingers go white.
We go to Alvor in Portugal on the Algarve quite a bit. Shouldn’t tell you really because it’s relatively unspoilt! Lots of walking opportunities, wide and varied. For flat, there are miles of boardwalks along the coastline and around the river leading to the harbour. Some of the restaurants and bars maybe closed, but there will still be a good few to keep hydrated. Actually, I’m wrong, it’s absolutely ‘orrible., if I were you, I’d try somewhere else.....😉

Thanks for that info Flapjack. See you all there. Lol
👍

I have been to Alvor 3 times now and really enjoy the walks. I have PAF and have always been fine, because the walks are flat. Alvor is beautiful. We last went in April this year. The weather was mixed, but on bad days we just caught the local bus and went to other local areas. Lagos is close and also flat
We have just come back from Nerja in Spain, which is also stunning and had lots of flat walking opportunities, this holiday was my first post ablation ( 4 months) adventure and was fine with the walking and in late october, early November the weather was amazingly hot and sunny.
How long after ablation did it take you to recover & feel well enough to go abroad? (I know they say it can take up to 3months) pleased to hear you had a lovely holiday
I had my ablation in july, it was a cancelation, so could not turn it down. I had a cruise booked for two weeks later( 50th birthday ) but canceled this. The hospital said i would be fine to fly though. I am glad i did cancle, as felt very tired after the op.
I felt it wise to wait until the 3 months blanking period was out of the way, just in case.
I was fine on the holiday to Nerja and glad i had waited 3 months because the tiredness would have spoilt it for me, if i had gone earlier.
It was just the boost i needed and helped, even more, with my overall recovery and well being.
I hope you manage to find a holiday for you and really enjoy yourself.

Just packing my bags 😉 Thanks ...taking our rowdy family and friends !😉
Not sure if you're worried about altitude or cold. I went to Antarctica in February, no problems at all. Cold has zero effect on my heart. One guy with AF, a surgeon by the way, did a plunge into 0 degree water !!! I'm really not recommending this, think he was crazy but he did it.
Personally, I'd be more concerned about altitude, anything over 8000 feet is a no, no for me.
There are some good but relatively gentle walking areas in the UK, have a look at some of the long distance paths, such as Norfolk Coast, Cotswold Way, Ridgeway Path. South Downs is fantastic as well !

To quote Noel Coward, “Very flat Norfolk” but it’s my home county and I love it. We have lots of wide open spaces and coastal walks and Peddar’s way and they are flat mostly. But beware the coastal breezes, at some times of year they make walking difficult for people like us.
Great coastline, walked 4 days on it a few years ago, very nice part of the world !

Thank you so much for this interesting question. We are hoping to move this year or the beginning of next. We are really in need of a healthy uplifting holiday as before ablation I felt really rough for about four years. First I had tummy probs...turned out to be Coeliac...then the heart business . I am so much better and at 80 want to enjoy my new lease of life. I will make a note of people’s recommendations and dream and plan !
Glad to hear how much better you are feeling. I'm 4weeks post ablation so still recovering
It has taken me a long time..but I gradually recovered. The ablation was ok ,I just need to get strong though as I felt so rough before hand. It really is important that you rest and build your strength up gradually. I actually go to the gym nowadays whereas before the ablation I could hardly get up the stairs...so all good . Hope you get stronger all the time
Hi well I live in the mountains.....morzine, the alps....my cardio said it doesn’t affect the AF.....he saud if you go high altitude maybe you’d get problems......I don’t find walking affected.......uphill I walk slowly.......but I’m in Australia on holiday....I had ablationjanuary but he’s kept me on tablets for this holiday.....I found the Queensland heat very bodily wearing, I can’t explain it well in words except to say I felt bodily uncomfortable doung too much.....yet in cooler warm weather my body feels fine.....ha ha this week it was so darn cold in the blue mountains I felt quite my old self!!!!
so I guess maybe what I’m saying is don’t got for too hot weather......
Sue
Holland sounds a good bet😂😂😂
Using L’Estartit, just south of the French border in Catalonia, there are beautiful coastal walks, mountains to choose from and great restaurants, bars as well as quality flats to rent.
Hi there! I am 80 in January and suffer from breathlessness on any incline, due to AF. I love walking and have organised groups with Holiday Fellowship, who have country houses with led guided walks in this country as well as abroad. If I was you I would try a walking holiday in this country, it can be just as exhilarating, and at least if you did need medical attention its not far away. HF do up.to three walks a day in the Lake District, Scotland, Wales to mention a few. The food and company are great, as my friends will tell you, as we have just returned from the Brecon Beacons! Good Luck, Jeanie-p.
The world is your oyster, I love strolling along the Promenade D, 'anglais in Nice,
Sunny, moderate climate, with plenty of nearby places to visit ie. Monaco, Antibe
Ville France to name a few of many. All accessible on the local bus or train.
