I'm on amiodarone. My consultant says I cant come off it till I've had a ablation. I've had 3 cardioversion's and in normal rhythm. He said if I stop tabs I will go out of rhythm again. Been on tabs a year now. X

Hi Rod! I used to be prescribed Dronedarone or Multaq II. I took if for about one year after my first AF episode in Oct 2016. I was OK when I was on it together with 2.5mg Biso. No side effects. It’s a very strong drugs and belongs to the same class as Amidorone if I not mistaken. After about a year without AF when on it I was taken off the drug. Only on Bisoprolol. No AF for about a year too until August 2018. Was given Flec but it caused atrial flutter. Taken off it and now on Sotalol 120mg x 2. Considering ablation now and hope to do it before April 2020. Hope the Dronedarone suits you and at some point you will be taken off it without any side effects. I don’t think Dronedarone is prescribed for life or as a long term solution to ‘manage’ AF. While on it it is important that you are closely monitored by your EP. All the best. By the way Dronedarone is an anti arrhythmic drug to manage/control irregular heart rhythm and Bisoporol is a drug to control the fast heart beat.

Hi Rod,

I do have PAC from time to time and sometimes it will lead to AF. So would like to get that sorted out. In the long run, my personal goal would be to be taken off arrhythmic drug .

I was on Dronedarone for about a year. It’s best described as Amiodarone light. It tries to mimic its actions without the nasty side effects. I was intolerant to beta blockers so tried Dronedarone after being a year on Amiodarone. It was only semi effective in preventing AF and have since had a couple of ablations and have been AF free tor nearly 12 months.

Hi Rod been on Dronedarone( for rhythm control)since July 2018 ahead of 2nd cardioversion- consultant would only do second planned cardioversion if I took anti arrhythmic before and after. Was initially only on Bisoprolol for rate control.Amiodarone was mentioned as has best chance of holding NSR but I'd read about the possible effects and wasnt for me. Dronedarone is Amiodarone without potential thyroid affect although less effective. Still on it - the important thing is that kidney/liver function are regularly monitored and regular ECGs done. Check out NICE guidelines on monitoring requirements.
