Any women AF'ers, also struggling with heavy periods/anaemia on blood thinners ?

I have had fibroids for a no of years, that kept my iron levels n haemoglobin low. Now anaemic again, with excessive blood loss. Can't be good for my heart, may well be a causal factor for my AF in first place. Any one else similar ?

I don't know how near the menopause you are but I was diagnosed with fibroids a couple of years before and fibroids disappeared at menopause as did crippling migraines.

So tough when you are between devil and deep blue sea. Trust you are getting supportive therapy for anaemia that doesn't cause other issues (constipation!).

Make sure you are getting the most well absorbed iron not the most cost effective!

Yes thank you. Mine's also caused by fibroids and the anticoagulants. An 54, and still v regular. Looking FWD to having this out of the way. Thx v much for your reply

My iron & ferritin levels were extremely low & I had horrendous periods for around 2 years. Hit peri-menopause & things imrpoved marginally. No periods for around 10 months. Finally diagnosed with AF & put on Xarelto. ( after being told by numerous GPs that I was anxious/nervous/my heart was fine etc etc).

3 weeks in & I honestly thiught I was going to bleed to death. After 10 days I rang my cardiologist & got a referral ro a gynecologist. While waiting for that, I was asvised ro stop the xarelto until the bleeding stopped.

Gyno suggested ablation, mirena or hysterectomy.

There is no satsfactory outcome for women on anri-coagulants & as you point out tge excessive blood loss cannot be good for your heart.

Sorry for the essay!! I hope you get your iron & ferritin levels back up soon. Good luck with it all!

I believe there are a few on here who have had success with an ablation for the bleeding

Yes thx I think my AF is likely caused by the longstanding low iron. And ferritin. Been bout 4-5 yrs for me now

And new complications with anticoagulants. Prescribed Tranexemic acid to stem blood that seems to just store it for next time is now. 10 times worse N anaemic. Had to take week off work, so bad

Not sure if you've had that ?

Sorry! I only just saw your reply.

How are you getting on now? I hope things have settled down a bit for you.

That sounds like an awful side effect from the tranexamic acid.

I just had the most 'normal' period I have had in years! 6 days, no massive bleeding.

I.have really been watching what I eat for the last 3 montbs or so, so I'm hoping that has dond the trick. Will see what happens next.

Take care.

Hi 100h, well I just had a 2 week long but very light period that didn't affect my iron levels too much.

EP has now referred me to haematology so may be able to have iron transfusions if needed and gaenecology appointment end of Jan. Have to see how I go.

That all sounds promising! I hope things continue to improve for you & the haematologist & gynecologist come up with a workable treatment plan for you.
