Overactive thyroid........

Good morning, as some of you may be aware, there is a link between thyroid issues and AF. Since 2004, blood tests have indicated that I have an overactive thyroid and yesterday I saw an Endocrinologist who has prescribed carbimazole. He is seeing me again in three months time and if the thyroid has responded to the medication, he will arrange for me to have radioiodine treatment which is supposed to stabilise thyroid levels. If anyone knows anything about this process I would appreciate your comments.....thanks.

I've had Graves' disease which is the autoimmune variety of overactive for about 50 years, been treated many times with Carbimazole but needed partial surgery in my teens as the meds weren't controlling levels, then had Radioactive Iodine in my late 40s because again levels were out of control.

Having RAI will usually send you into hypothyroidism so you swap one problem for another, once hypo you will need to take Levothyroxine for life and it can be a rocky ride finding the right dose.

I suggest you post on ThyroidUK for more info.

Flapjack, ask your question at HU Thyroid UK. Lots of folk there have had radioiodine or RAI.

Great!

Flapjack, do you have Graves?

I have Graves and am always worried I will develop AF. From the little I have read re Graves and AF, not everyone who goes hypo is rid of the AF. But u should decide based on how your AF presents and how the Graves triggers it.

Best wishes.

Sorry to hear that, Flapjack.

I was on carbimazole years back and lucky for me it righted the imbalance and so far haven’t had to progress to anything else.

Hope you get great support on t’other site - and that this is something that can be easily righted for you :) x
