Since taking carbamazapine for trigeminal neuralga my blood pressure has gone up from 130/70 to a persistant 160/85 ish. This morning was its lowest since I started the carbamazapine and that was 159/81.
The pain is excrutiating without the tablets but am I doing my heart damage with such high blood pressure. I was doing so well since my ablation over 3 years ago on my 82nd birthday ... for any oldies considering an ablation.

Sorry your still suffering with this Evelyn. Have you spoken to your GP about this he may be able to give you something to lower it if necessary. I had a look on the side effects of this drug and it doesn’t mention high blood pressure, it could be the pain that is causing it. I wouldn’t think that this is too high, my blood pressure is often in this range although if it’s not normal for you I would go and get checked out. Hope you feel better soon 🤗
Thank you Brenda. I have seen the GP so often with this complaint... 3 times in one week. She is as much in the dark about it as I was. Just bought a £20 book from the TN Association to get myself a little more knowledgeable. It is so very rare apparently. Could be the high BP is what is making me a bit wobbly. Evelyn
I must say I had never heard of it so looked it up, it sounds horrible. Maybe referral to a specialist is what is needed if your GP knows little about it. Virtual hugs 🤗
I can really sympathise and understand why you need the medication for trigeminal neuralgia; my aunt had this and was in absolute agony. It would be a good idea to see your GP soon for advice about your blood pressure. Best of luck.
Thank you Irene. The pain is really bad and the tablets to relieve it make me feel ill. Not supposed to have them with AF but it is the better of two evils.
I don't know if you are aware that there are other medications that for your trigeminal neuralgia and your consultant may try these if s/he knows it is affecting your AF. I know eventually my Aunt had botox, and then the nerve partially severed which gave some relief but I think that is a last resort treatment should all medication fail. I would chase this up.
Hi Enjoy I feel badly that you are suffering like you are. Blood pressure over 120/70 is responsible for many problems especially hardening of the arteries etc. It is now implicated in dementia and Alzheimer's risk. If at all possible please work to get it down. It is so unfair for any medical person to say well if thats your "Normal". High blood pressure is never a normal. TN can be treated in many ways without harsh medication. I am not a doctor so this is just my experience. Heat is always helpful. Never cold. Cold can trigger it. All B vitamains but not too much B12 That can cause it to flare. B3 B1 B2 B5 B6 are so helpful. Fish oil such as Co Q 10 can really provide relief and stop flaring. You probably already know all of this but I thought I would put it out here just in case. I so hope you get relief soon. I believe the pain is causing the jump in BP. Just my opinion. You take good care.
Thank you horses for your reply. I saw a new doctor at my normal Medical Centre this morning and she has doubled my Losartan Potassium to bring the BP down. I now have to take 100 mg a day instead of 50 and if it doesn't work, to pop back in on Monday.
