Xarelto and Liver Issues
You are supposed to have liver function tests at three and six months and therafter anually if you are on rivaroxaban . This should pick up any problems. It seems that some GPs here in UK are not aware of this.
I think that is also true of Elquis, but my EP did not order any liver tests. The US doctors are also apparently not aware of this. I had my annual with my GP and he did them, as he always does, but that was after I had been on Eliquis for a year.
Hello did not know this was a necessity. I have been on xarelto for almost a year. Who checks liver GP, Pulmonologist or Cardiologist?
I have some raised enzyme and lowered calcium levels recently. I started Apixaban over 5 years ago. I feel fine but it shows the importance of proper liver and kidney screening for those of us taking any of the DOACs
Are they doing anything about the results, or just watching it over time?
So far, just retesting after a couple of weeks on calcium tabs.
I have been on Xarelto for 3 years and have regular full blood tests, on my most recent one a couple of months ago,my GP described my liver function as like a teenagers, all my results as beautiful and my Cardio described them as pristine. I had a compression fracture of a vertebra about 18 months ago . due to some osteoporosis and osteopenia, and was immediately put onto Boniva and Calciferol, a - calcium and Vitamin D combination, and I wonder if those tablets protect the liver.
I had raised alk phosphatase on annual check ( on apixaban). I had to ask for check. Had renal function when I started it but not Liver function as far as I could see so no base line. Repeated after one month then three months. Slightly lower. Am expecting another test August but may have to remind!!
A friend of mine developed elevated liver enzymes - but it turned out she wasn’t taking Rivaroxaban with a substantial meal containing protein and fat. She changed the time she took the tablet to when she had her main meal and had no further problems - another thing the doctors don’t tell you!
I have monthly bloods for liver & kidney but it is more normal to have 6 monthly checks. Our GP practice is outstanding and ring and text me if I haven’t made my next appointment and are meticulous about regular bloods believing that regular monitoring means they pick up on early indicators, reducing their work load as often the nurses deal with any anomalies.
Would hope that they are as meticulous like that here in the US. But its sad when you dont know what to ask so you could be in the "Know".. So then it may be best to take xarelto with a meal am thinking?? will def try that way,
I've been on Xarelto for 2 years now and no problems with my liver Have periodically had blood tests for liver function .
You are correct about not monitoring yearly in the US.....I was remiss in not have blood work for two years and it showed up. Was diagnosed with fatty liver and am seeing a hepatologist. I was not obese, was active and ate a healthy diet.........Also had Lyme before the AFib diagnosis. I think it is connected.
