Hot flushes and retching

A while ago i wrote about being extremely hot and then retching and slightly vomiting at my sons wedding. Last night we went out for a family meal and the same thing happened. I went very hot (so did my young daughter in law) and had to leave the table to retch (she didn't.) After that I felt fine. Also we had an extended family lunch the other day and if I hadn't had control of the air cooling/warming I think it would have happened again.

Although I think that I am not in heart failure ,as my last ECHO a few months ago showed only slight dilation, I am wondering if it is heart related. Maybe my heart cannot cope with cooling and digesting at the same time?

Has anyone any ideas about this and no, I was not drinking excessively or at all!

Hi barb i get the very hot bit after eating and i think it is to do with digesting and all our blood goes to the stomach as i often feel lightheaded at the same time. Its awful and often embarrassing but all part of the AF journey i guess. X

Have you found a way around it?

I drink very very cold water as soon as i feel it starting and get some air. Nothing other than that I'm afraid.

Yes. That makes sense to me. I drink loads of cold water and try to get air. I wish that i knew the medical reason for this.

Hi Barb, I think you need to let your GP know this is happening, as I know someone who experienced similar and he ended up having a stent in his heart.

Oh, not good to hear. I am having problems with after effects of a spine op at the moment and also a high irregular regular heart beat. But GP says she wants my pain sorted out first. But she doesn't know about the flushes etc.

It could actually be a reaction to something in the food. But I think you should tell your GP. I get hot flushes from Diltiazem I think but not the sickness. As someone else had a reaction too I'd suspect flavour enhancers in the food. My family took me out for a meal, they had a dish with a creamy sauce and I had pizza, as soon as we got home they had violent diarrhoea but I was fine. Restuarants definitely use additives we don't 😬

Ai used to get the retching andthe sickness. Since my Ablation and Pacemaker it’s gone. I’m sure it is a part of A Fib / A Flutter made worse by anxiety .

Thank you Jon. It is reassuring for me to hear of others having similar experiences.

Sometimes if your blood sugar is low before eating it can drop even further before your food has had a chance to digest a little and put it up. Any alcoholic drink will make this worse as alcohol drops the sugar. This happens to me though I have nausea. I have vomited with this but it's years ago. Try eating the carbs on your plate first and if you are having a drink do not start it till at least halfway through the meal. No aperitifs!!

Oh dear, no cocktails!

This happens to me all the time, usually after an evening meal, but sometimes after breakfast. It usually happens when I am in AF and my bp has dropped too low and I think you are right its the digesting process puts a strain on the heart. It has only happened to me since my ablation in June last year. Annoyingly we only have a kitchen downstairs so it means I have to get upstairs somewhere soft in case I pass out. Sometimes I lose my vision completely for several minutes.

That sounds awful for you.

I think you need to see your GP about this-it might be related to the heart or not. So far as I know it is not a common symptom related to the heart. You could try ringing the cardiac nurses at your local hospital for more information whilst you are waiting for to see a doctor; at least they could let you know whether this is something which needs urgent attention or not.

I have never heard of cardiac nurses

How strange. I write this from my hospital bed awaiting discharge. After eating an M&S cheese and onion slice, I woke to incredible chest pains and a clammy feeling and was sick. The pain didn't subside so I rang 111 who called an ambulance given my history of AF and valve disease.

I was sick another three times and the pain subsided after I was given an ante sickness drug.

ECG showed heart ok an x rays and echo and CT scan showed no blood clots. Could it have been chronic indigestion?

Guess I will find out one they discharge me! X
