Edoxaban v apixaban

My cardio advised that should I decide to go on anticoagulants then he would normally prescribe apixaban 5mg twice a day. However on seeing my doctor she has advised that the surgery prescribe edoxaban (60mg once a day). Anybody got any advice on which one is best please?

Better for who? Edoxaban is apparently cheaper is all.

Trying to determine which one has the least potential issues. They probably both do the same job in terms of anticoagulation

It seems to the ‘choice’ at the moment as it is cheaper and has the advantage of just one a day. Still very new so long term, who knows. There are some claims of less bleed risk over other DOAC’s

I like Apixaban because it is taken twice a day, not so bad if you forget one or have an upset stomach and easier to adjust if you have minor surgical procedures.

I had no trouble getting apixaban via my GP as suggested for me by Dr Gupta. I say for me as everyone is different and if you are more likely to forget a twice a day tablet, for example, another DOAC may be more suitable.

My EP said that Edoxaban was better at preventing clots and as I had had one we actually waited until it had been approved for use and then I came off warfarin. Previously I was on dabigatran

I woukd contact your cardiologist and report what has been suggested,or insist strongly at the surgery that you will be following the Specialists prescribing!

No reason other than cost, but Apixaban seems to be the drug of choice of cardios and EPs....so thats good enough for me.Have reservations about the level of knowledge of Af with many GPs!

Thanks. I’m also going to suggest that I have a problem with indigestion (of which I’ve found a regime that works for me) and don’t want anything to affect that. Edoxaban appears to cause reflux and I cannot have omeprazole.

Xarelto gave me really bad nausea and other issues, as did Eliquis I have only been on Edoxaban for a short time but so far no bad effects.

What were your other issues if you don’t mind me asking as I’m on rivaroxaban and I seem to be getting periods of coca cola urine which I’m assured by tests and lab results are not infections. Thank you

on riveroxiban I had and still have, edema in lower legs with really itchy rash and by afternoon my legs felt like concrete blocks also muscle and joint pain. Switched to Edoxaban 60 mg by Cardio/ep but it's only been 9 days so too soon to tell however I can say that so far no bad effects. I had no dark coloured urine though.

My consultant also said Edoxaban was more effective nothing to do with the cost, and i did have a lot of headaches on Apixaban.

edoxaban has had better results and of course is newer. I went off warfarin onto edoxaban and it is lovely just one a day and lot less tests! good luck

The Cardiologist's registrar said to go on apixaban - GP said he was not familiar with that medication and wanted to prescribe another - he then gave me a choice and I chose apixaban. No problems with it.
