Went to see consultant today. He's now put me on amiodarone hydrocoride. I 've had 1 stop start of heart as I call it. Also angiogram. He is booking me in for another stop as only lasted 4weeks. He's told me tabs side effects are of feeling sick. Anyone else on these tablets?

Hi ! Yes I've been on Amiodarone several times over the years. I would imagine that side effects vary from person to person. Whilst I never felt sick I did find to begin with that I lost my appetite for the first couple of weeks or so......unfortunately I soon found it again. 😉. Hopefully being on this drug in the weeks leading up to your next cardioversion ( your stop start as you put it ?) may give your more success. Is an ablation planned ?

No not mentioned an ablation. Im up to 10 tablets a day now. What a chore sorting them every week.

Unfortunately around 25% fail within the first month. Very best of luck at the next attempt. Amiodarone before your next stop/start should certainly help and i expect you may be kept on a maintenance dose for a period to maintain normal rhythm. Good luck.

I have been on Amioderone for about two years now 200mg once a day. I have been on this drug as a last chance option not able to have ablation, but I have started to get really bad side effects ie over active thyroid and really bad skin rashes that itch.

Saw cardiologist last week and he is now proposing a pacemaker and to come off Amioderone when that device is installed, it can’t come soon enough.

I hope that you will not become a long term user of Amioderone and I wish you the best of luck with the jump start!

I’ve been on it for a week. I’m also now on Atenolol and Digoxin. EP said we need an aggressive approach to get my arrhythmias under control. He said he’d only keep me on Amiodarone for a couple of months. I’m a bit nervous as I’ve heard so many horror stories but he said the bad side effects are generally felt by people on it for a longer timeframe. I’m still getting daily AF but it’s shorter and slower so I’m confident that a few more weeks on it will get things under control.

I read on here that if one is on Amiodarone, they should come off digoxin. That the two are not comparable.

I had read that too and asked my EP about it but he wants me to stay on both for a little while. He’s an expert in the field so I’m sure he knows what he’s doing. I’m on another drug that is contraindicated but he and my pharmacist both said that does if that is too low to interfere.

I see my EP again in 2 weeks so will see what recipe he chooses for my drug cocktail then 💊🍸😊

I am on amioderone for a short time prior to a cardioversion next week then an ablation early in the new year - then stopping amiodarone as long term use is not advisable due to side effects. No problems so far but my GP has advised a blood test after two months of taking the drug to check the liver and thyroid.

The aim of taking it is to keep in NSR after the cardioversion.

Hi Gincalpe - I am having the same treatment to although I get my cardioversion on the 20th of Dec and my ablation on the 23rd of Jan. Please let me know how you get on. They started me on Amiodrarone 3 x 200mg a day for a week then 2 a day for a week then 1 a day thereafter I will be rattling for a while. I wish you the very best of luck.

Thanks Lorlaw70

We are on a similar timetable. I had a CV last week but already back in AF in spite of amioderone. Ablation on 16th January with 2/3rds chance of success so I am hopeful. I will stop amioderone then.

Hi, Yes I was taking Amiodarone for about 6 months before my cardioversion which was a success, and I am sure it did help taking it prior to CV, as I felt my heart rhythm improving before my CV. The only side effect I had was a body rash which cleared after a few days.

For myself personally I wouldn't like to be on this drug long term, but we are all different, and side effects vary from person to person.

All the best.

I was put on Amiodarone earlier this year following a failed cardioversion. I then had another one which also failed so had an ablation in September. This was immediately successful. I had it done under GA and it took over 5 hours but I think my EP was determined to get it sorted before he let me out of theatre - a bit of a pride thing! I am still on Amiodarone until my follow up in December when I know he wants to take me off it because he doesn't like the possible side effects. So far I have been ok on it although the sunshine in the summer was a bit of a problem. My GP keeps a close eye on me and arranges regular tests and so far so good and I only have another month to go. I have been in NSR now since September and I feel so different. I had not realised how debilitating AF was. I was in persistent AF so did not have dramatic episodes but I am so pleased I went for the ablation. Good luck with your choices. I have been very lucky.

I just started taking these tablets today before my cardioversion on the 20th of Dec. I to am keen to hear from other people about these tablets. Best of luck with them.

I was on them after being on a 23 hour infusion back in 2017, just to reign in the HR as they wouldn't DC cardiovert me..... only short term no ill effects.
