Please -has anyone suffered serious Insomnia with this drug? I have to take it for 6 weeks at least before a Cardioversion but my nights are horrendous!!
My EP said to keep taking the Bisoprolol as well--only 1.25 but to stop it if my heart slowed down too much. What is too much ?? Could the 2 druga together be keeping me awake all night I wonder.

Two weeks ago I stopped taking Amiodarone (have taken it many times) Yes, they want you to take this type of drug before a cardioversion (I've had several) so like I did you probably feel that you have no choice and take what you are told. All the time I was taking this drug I had to use sleeping pills which my GP prescribed (Zopiclone). I found it impossible to sleep and would suggest that if you are the same perhaps you should get something to help you short term to have a restful night. Thankfully, I'm sleeping so much better now and am only on warfarin.
I hope your cardioversion is successful and wish you well.
Thankyou for your reply--good to hear someone too has suffered the same. Think I will try the sleeping aid, probably has to be one sold over the counter as it takes nearly 3 weeks to see my GP! Not seeing my EP until March. Thanks for your good wishes too. A Happy and healthy 2015 to you.
I don't remember suffering particularly from insomnia while on the two meds but although only on the Amiodarone for a short time I did end up being admitted to the cardiac ward of the local hospital with bradycardia.
However, this was just my own experience and perhaps the way my body reacted to the combination of Amiodarone and Bisoprolol. Probably best to have a word with your EP if that's possible, not getting enough sleep isn't good and as a chronic insomniac I really sympathise with you.
I too suffered insomnia whilst taking Amiodarone (it built up to my only getting 3 hrs sleep a night and I could not sleep during the day either) - other side effects also crept up on me as I continued to take it. I became very unwell over time. I think talking to your EP or GP is a really good idea.
Do you have anything at home to measure your heart rate? I would also recommend getting something that can reassure you. I have a blood pressure and heart wrist monitor which is quite a reasonable price.
You need to ask your Dr re your heart rate that is acceptable.
I was on Amiodarone + Bisoprolol for about six weeks when I was first diagnosed, but the EP stopped the Amiodarone since it hadn't done what he had hoped - namely, put me back into sinus rhythm. Whilst I was taking it I suffered from appalling night sweats, such that I had to get out of bed and change my pjs once or twice a night. Do hope your EP or GP can get this sorted for you.
Yes, I was on Amiodarone for about4 years, then side effects kicked in. They were horrendous... shuffling like a zombie, constantly tired trembling from head to feet. Finally, after outright refusal to take them anymore, my cardiologist changed me to Bisoprolol. I'm a different person now.
