Bumetanide

Following my recent heart surgery which included an ablation I have been prescribed Bumetanide.

Is anybody else taking this diaretic . I am left with a very dry mouth, eyes and flaky skin and have noticed that it is affecting my gums. I frightened of losing my teeth! As well as everything else that's going on

Sorry Becks, I have no knowledge of Bumetanide but why not ring your dentist......hope you are recovering OK otherwise, best wishes

Ps. Dehydration is a major problem with heart issues. I’m not medically trained but wonder if you should be drinking more water but this needs to be checked with your doctor....bit of a chicken and egg situation!

Yes they have me on a water restriction but I fear I am turning into a snake shedding my skin! It is very much a chicken and egg situation. I will talk to my unfortunately named "heart failure nurse" and see whether things may improve.

How much water intake are you allowed per day. I have AF and HF and I found the amount allowed was not enough for me. I do not know the drug you refer to and I am lucky that I do not have much of a problem with fluid retention now. When I first was diagnosed, I ended up in hospital with fluid retention (over 2 stone in fluid) I was on furosemide daily but after a year I stopped it and now only take it when required, my cardio was against this and my HF nurse was for it! The reason I wanted to sop taking it daily is that furosemide does not entirely agree with me and tends to make my heart rate go up. I tend to drink regularly throughout the day, always have a glass of water close by or a bottle of water when out. As mentioned above perhaps contact your dentist to see if they can help. I was on Spiro(can not remember rest of it's name) a combined water and heart tablet, that gave me a very dry mouth and dry eyes. I had to stop that as I have Glaucoma and it was affecting my eyes badly.

Thank you Cassie for your response. I am limited to 2 litres. I don't drink much in the way of tea or coffee but I sip water all day. I find it helps raise my otherwise low blood pressure. Like you I get dry eyes and mouth and my skin is flaking even with moisturiser. I hope I am not on it for too long but it is stopping the water retention in my feet legs and lungs.

I have been on a diuretic for about 8 years and Bumetanide for about 4. I have absolutely no restriction on liquid intake but I hate the diuretics as they play hell with QoL and with travelling. I now take it about every 3 days but more often if my oedaema flares up. Today is what I call a tablet day, so cant make phone calls that might last a long time, no visitors unless I know them well, no going out and the frequent toilet visits for about 6 hours.

Oh Barb thank you for your response. Whilst I appreciate that they are doing me the power of good I am taking 4 daily and all I seem to do day and night is pee. The hope of returning to work is slowly fading and as you say QOL is important and what is the alternative.

Two at eight and two at 12. I can't remember the dosage (I take so many tablets every dsy) I do need to go back in to have more done to the Mitral valve so hopefully after that I should be able to cut down.

We did try to lower the dose and just take 1 at 12 instead of 2 but my legs ankles and feet swelled too much.

I do hope that you can soon cut back. That's no life you have there. Please let your consultant know how its affecting you. I think that sometimes they don't consider that.
