Eliquis and Ciprofloxacin

I was put on Eliquis several weeks ago after being hospitalized with multiple DVTs (and a history of DVTs and PEs). I also have chronic Urinary Tract infections. I have a prescription for Ciprofloxacin at home (doctor prescribed) and I'm 100% certain I currently have a UTI. It is Sunday here, and over 100 degrees with high humidity. I cannot drive at the moment. Does anyone know if there are any contraindications with taking Eliquis and Cipro?

If you get no advice, try googling it, as there are sites that show contraindications with various drugs. Or see if you can find an instore pharmacy and call before they close at 4pm

I did do that, and found no contraindications. That being said, see seasider's response. Glad I held off!

Speak to pharmacists. I find them helpful.

Cipro and Quinolones are dangerous drugs that can cause immediate or very delayed side effects. They should not be prescribed for UTI's, prostatitis and general infections only for life threatening ones. Last month the EMA (European Medicines Agency) held a public inquiry into them at Germanys request. In America the makers Bayer wrote to all doctors on this a couple of years ago but the message does not get taken to heart as like Amiodarone it is an effective drug.

The whole inquiry is on Youtube if you have four hours to spare !

If you just whizz to the end you can get the chairpersons summing up.

Thank you so much! I did not take the cipro. Oh wait, I see that cipro in general is dangerous. Not necessarily just the Eliquis/Cipro mix. Calling my doctor today.

Your doctor probably will be surprised to hear this :-) It does not affect everyone it seems in part to be dependent on a persons DNA. It affected me to a degree the first time I was given it but it was the three later times before the penny really dropped. I had all sorts of investigations with a neurologist who could not identify my type of neuropathy. I was even told that I had CMT. I now cannot walk unaided outside and use a rollator or a wheelchair to get about. It or possibly my change of gait has given me back pain.

Bisoprolol interacted and was a drug that worsened the neuropathy while taking it. I won't have a steroid injection in my back as when still unknowing I had one for bursitis in my hip that interacted.

Do let me know your doctors reaction.

So sorry to hear about your drug reactions. Sometimes I think the meds are worse than the diseases they treat. I did talk to my doctors (family doctor and urologist) about Cipro. They both stated that because of my chronic UTIs, Cipro was one of the only antibiotics left to use. I should state that I'm in the USA. We're really behind on the abuse of antibiotics. I am on a three day course. Seriously thinking of looking into Holistic doctors. Fingers crossed. All my best to you.

So happy I found HealthUnlocked. I cannot remember the # of times I took Ciprofloxacin for URI, Diverticulitis etc. Over prescribed in U.S.

I hope that you are reaction free. One group affected are people who have previously had tendonitis as I had as that is one of the first obvious areas it affects.

I was given it in hospital at the time I had my aortic valve replaced. First thing I went to see my doctor about after coming home was tendonitis. he later prescribed that family of drugs for prostatitis and each time I felt tendon pain again and did not finish the course. Last time was in hospital when my pacemaker was fitted and again I stopped taking it and back to the doctor with tendonitis.

Forgot to say that it is also the cause of Gulf War Syndrome as all the troops were given it to protect them from any possible anthrax attacks. American Mail Men were also given it after 9/11 when there were fears of anthrax infected mail.

I didn't know this! Time to find a new doctor I think.

I never knew this. Yes, Corporations have owned too much. I sat on the Ethics Committee of a hospital as a home care/social work member. Loved it. We had exec dining room and lunch as well. The various disciplines fed each other into increased scrutiny. ER charge MD spoke of tx 3 dying pts and the Rx she wrote? Recall coca cola cans flashing across screen of playoffs... once we became focused on ETHICAL PURCHASING, lunch was not provided, the executive dining room was no longer available etc etc. Sad!

How much were non medical members like yourself able to influence policies or procedures ?

Sounds about right. Pharmaceuticals are such a big business, especially here in the USA. I don't remember all this "drug pushing" when I lived in the UK.

Absolutely. We really are behind when it comes to prescription medications. Too much of a big business here.

I am new to HeathUnlocked, so not sure how all of this works. When I checked email today, I saw there were four responses to my question. But when I came to the site to check them out, I can only see two. Odd!

There are no specific interactions between Ciprofloxacin and Eliquis. However Cipro can have dangerous permanent side effects and should be used only if absolutely necessary. Other drugs used for UTI's include Augmentin, Bactrim, Cefalosporins,Doxycycline, etc . A culture and sensitivity should be done to identify the bacteria and determine the best antibiotic to use.
