Eliquis and minor surgery.
I’m scheduled for minor surgery and the doctor wants me to stop taking Eliquis 48 hours before and 48 hours after the surgery. I’m not sure that’s a good idea. Any feedback would be welcome. Thank you. Four

It’s absolutely fine and normal procedure. I’ve had a couple of surgeries and stopped for 5 and 7 days.
This drug has a very short half life so to be honest 24 hours is long enough but you must decide if you trust your doctor. I had a small skin cancer (BCC) removed a few years ago whilst taking warfarin and never stopped so different doctors have different ideas..
Every doctor has slightly different views, but most hospitals in UK have a protocol to which the pre op nurse must adhere. (realise you are in USA)I've had similar intervals which have been fine.
Between 24 and 48 hours cessation before and after an operation or procedure is quite normal and absolutely no problem.
I will be in the same situation soon as having several teeth removed under specialist dentistI am in Australia and was told not to take Eliquis for two days before and one day afterwards
And the most I’ve ever stopped anticoagulants for is 12 hours and that was before Pacemaker revision and that was a 3 hour procedure so that demonstrates the difference in knowledge and opinion between doctors but I suspect also specialities and procedures.
I sympathise - I was most unhappy stopping my Apixaban for an op in March but in the event I was fine.
Same here I am on Apixiban and prior to Prostrate surgery I was instructed to stop the anticoagulant 48 hrs prior and restart 72 hrs post operation.....I have to say I was concerned but in the event everything was fine with no issues at all. Good luck. Roy
I just had a colonoscopy three days ago. Cardiologist said to stop Eliquis 48 hours before and then the gastroenterologist after the procedure said to resume the next day. No problems either way. Good luck….
My EP only had me stop Eliquis for 12 hours, I opted for 24, and that was prior to my last cryoablation. Eliquis is easier to manipulate than any of the others. Good luck!
I stopped Apixaban for 3 days prior to my last hip op and restarted the day after. Even so I reckon I must have bled a lot as after both my hip ops I was anaemic and had to have a transfusion the last time.
Follow your doctor's instructions. They are perfectly normal and safe.
I have had several surgeries, one being an abalation which I stopped Eliquis 48 hrs before & 36 hrs after & I had no problem. BTW the abalation was 10 months ago & my a/fib is under control. Good luck!
So i been taking Eliquis for a while, i do have fibroid that makes me bleed alot so jsut before i start my cycle i stop taking Eliquis cos it will cause more bleeding. So i think u'll be fine i have my Afib under control knock on the wood.
I would think the kind of surgery you’re having might be a factor? Some surgeries have more bleeding issues afterwards. But in general I would not want to go that many days without OAC. The drug does not stay in your system that long. After having a stroke I wouldn’t do it. Last surgery I had for a blocked artery, I was off OAC for 48 hours and was allowed to go back on Eliquis the next morning.
I've had to do the same thing, several times. It is a little worrying but seems to be necessary to ensure that bleeding due to surgery can be controlled.
Because of endoscopy I stopped Xarelto 3 days before and restarted after. I tried not to dwell o it. The cardiologist approved it and I trusted him. Good luck with your procedure.
