Hi friends, I wonder if any of you have trouble with pins and needles in your hands during the night. No matter how I change position my left hand has pins and needles. Darn annoying.

Pins and needles
Hi Rienij70
Yes frequently for several years now. I cant quite ascertain the cause.
However, i personally believe it to be originating from the 5th thoracic vertebrae.
Its rather scary when you first experience it which is understandable.
Just have a word with your GP to put your mind at rest,
Carol.
Thank you Carol. Have an appointment next Thursday will mentioning it. RIENIJ
I do wake occasionally with pins and needles and sometimes numbness which eases with repositioning. My assumption is, to date, that it is caused by the propped-up/inclined position i sleep in, to help alleviate reflux, which causes pressure on the neck and spine. Of course it may be from another cause.
Hi Rienij70 , I do too, and have to sleep on my right side as any other position causes my heart to beat very rapidly. I put it down to being one of the side effects of the many forms of medication I’m on, and flex my hands until it disappears. It’s usually the left hand but can be either/both.
I mentioned it to my heart failure nurse and she didn’t seem too concerned.
Yes I have had it quite a bit but not on a regular basis. I too sleep propped up and only on my back or right side (as left side is a potential AF trigger for me). Quite worrying at times as wake up and the whole arm is numb but wares off quickly with some exercise. I have always put it down to sleeping on it, although I didn't use to get it as bad. I am on 200mgs Flecainide per day, if relevant.
I have it regularly in both arms below the elbow extending to the hands. It can be painful sometimes. I sleep with my head on my arms sometimes which probably doesn’t help.
There’s a nerve that runs along the inside edge of the elbows. If my sleeping position pinches that nerve then I get pins & needles - the mere weight of the arm pressing on that nerve causes it, so if I lie on my back I avoid/relieve the pins and needles by lying with straight arms palms up (this rotates the inside of the elbow to up position). Can’t lie on my back with palms down or arms across chest because it catches that nerve. Mostly I roll over to my right side for the same reason.
Thank you Amazona1
Do you also have thyroid problems as could be carpal tunnel syndrome
Hi Hylda, don’t think so. Got arthritis. Af. High blood pressure, under investigation for heart disease, angina. That is it I think. Last time they tested the thyroid it was ok. I sometimes wonder if all the medications makes everything worse. Or at least the side effects makes it feel like that. Old age is not a friend.
It’s certainly not for cissies! I had pins and needles in my right hand, mostly at night, used to have my hand out of bed. Dropped plates, bottles of milk before they decided it was carpal tunnel
I had problems with my left arm, painful etc. First doctor said carpal tunnel, but turned out three blood clots in my arm. I have been very lucky, had bilateral PE in my lungs, as a result of hip replacement, three in my arm, and one in my leg. So someone up there is looking after me. 😉
I get it in both hands. My GP referred me to a neorologist who conducted a nerve test which showed that I have carpal tunnel syndrome. No treatment though just splints which make it worse now I have numbness aswell as pins and needles. Sorry to be so negative. If only I had appreciated my health when I was younger .
Hi Maclan, so true I stupidly worked until I was 64. 5 month later had a hip replacement, with the complications of PE’s so down hill after that. I always told my daughter and her husband, if you want to do something, do it now while you can. Mind you just as well you don’t know what is coming our way. That would even be worse. I suppose it is a bonus to wake up in the morning. They alternative doesn’t bare thinking about.😊
