I feel ypur pain. My knee is giving me fits but cardiologist says no to any nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs, which really help the pain but hurt the heart.

I don't know maybe I'm a bit confused. Seems like a lot of people are on Eliquis or similar medications because of heart issues. I put on Eliquis because of blood clots in my lungs. Seems like this is something genetic from my mother's side of the family so I will likely be on Eliquis or something similar for the rest of my life. But as far as I know my heart is fine. But am I just in denial? I know I had some issues with my heart immediately after the blood clots but further testing since then has shown my heart has completely recovered.

NDAID's don't hurt the heart, but they increase the risk of GI bleeding, which is why they are contraindicated with Eliquis.

NSAIDs increase risk of AF also

Hi there, don’t worry- it doesn’t mean you’re in denial about your heart :) From what you say, there’s nothing wrong with your heart, we just tend to reply in terms of heart/rhythm stuff because this is a forum based around Atrial Fibrillation. On here we have generally been prescribed Eliquis because of the risk of stroke associated with AF. However, many people are on Eliquis purely because of blood clots like you.

The link with NSAID painkillers like ibuprofen is that anyone taking an anticoagulant (like Eliquis) are at higher risk of an internal bleed, and NSAIDs make the risk much greater. So we don’t take them together. Bad news for those in pain, I know 😢

I believe it’s safe to take codeine with Eliquis- but I’m not sure how that works long term. I don’t know about OA but I’m wondering if other pain relief such as amitriptyline could help? I’d definitely book to see your GP to discuss pain relief options. And make sure they know how unbearable it is.

Really hope you get some help x

I use Glucosamine Gold from Nature's Best (see their website) which contains several things which all hep the arthritis. One or two of these may have some 'blood thinning' properties, but I am prepared to take that risk in return for the help with the arthritis. I don't get serious bruising or the like, so trust that my risk of bleeding is not increased too much (I'm on Xarelto). I have also found turmeric useful, but this may have a similar problem.

With warfarin the level of that would be adjusted accordingly, which would be better.

I also use Glucosamine 1500mg with Chondroitin taken daily , but with any severe pain from arthritic joints I use a small Tens machine which gives instantaneous relief.
