Hello Karim...the procedure can take 2 - 4+ hours. Normally one is kept in overnight as the puncture sight has to be observed over a number of hours and of course you will be closely monitored.

Wishing you all the best for the 14th. Let us know how you get on

Sandra

I suppose it's different for every patient. One nice thing is you will be completely asleep and won't know a thing! I spent the night which I was glad for. Everything went well, no worries. Best wishes to you!

Had both mine done late in the day, so stayed in overnight. Procedure took a few hours, not sure exactly.

Have a good one and hope it works like mine did. Couldn’t even feel my heart afterwards. It was great.

When I asked my ep how long it would take he said how long is a piece of string it actually took almost 6hrs and I was in overnight but every thing went well

I've had 3 ablation they all took 4 hours. Overnight stay for monitoring. For my first I was awake at the end for the freezing part. No worries though as it was very interesting. My other 2 was done with general anaesthetic. Best wishes for the procedure

It might be advisable to have a discussion with your EP or nurse. They will go through the details of this procedure.

It can be done under general anaesthetic or sedation. Most people stay overnight and the length of time the procedure takes depend on how much they have to do. Mine took over 4 hours.

You will have to stay lying down for a few hours afterwards so bring book, water, phone or other distractions. Some people say lip salve as dry. I was fine after mine but listen to advice on here. Rest for at least two weeks and do very slow, gradual return to normal. Be prepared for a period of some AF, odd arrhythmias and tiredness. My heart took 5 months to settle down but i have been free if AF for almost 4 years.

Stay positive and good luck 🍀

I was a late afternoon procedure, about 4 1/2 hours, with consequent stay overnight. I was under conscious sedation, so was fully aware (and very interested!) until they started freezing, at which point I remember no more.......

Don't worry about it, you will be in safe hands. Strange feelings in the weeks afterwar (including in my case migraine like auras), but nothing to worry about.

JUST MAKE SURE YOU REST!

Hi Karim

Had my ablation 3 years ago so testing my memory here!! I went in for"prepping" around 08-30am a went to theatre around 10-30. I believe procedure took about 4 hours total but nothing to worry about as knew nothing about it until in the recovery ward. The wound where the catheter is inserted (in the groin normally) will be inspected regularly around every 30 minutes or so until they are satisfied you are not still bleeding . I was home the same day, told to relax and take it easy for 3-4 days. This a routine operation performed maybe 1000 times a year, so procedure well established.

Good luck for the 14th!! 😊😊😊👍

No I have no problems with AF as far as I am aware! Not symptomatic. Not taking any meds, but I did have a duel chamber pacemaker installed a couple of years ago. Heart had been in sinus rhythm 99% of the time since ablation.

Hi I had my ablation on 15th June. My procedure was 5 and a half hours. I was awake with pain relief it was wee but sore at times and was pretty exhausted after it but the staff were brilliant. Was in overnight and next day was still very tired..... but now.... I feel fabulous..., all the best 😊

Hi Karim, Had my Ablation on 4th July at the Royal Brompton. The procedure lasted 7 and a half hours under a general anaesthetic. They performed a Transeptal puncture, where they make a small hole between the atria to ablate both sides. Hospital staff were incredible. I stayed over night after the Ablation. Since the procedure I have made pretty steady progress. Two main things I have learned. Firstly recognising the difference between ectopic beats and AF (they do feel pretty similar to me). Obviously the ectopics are not really too much to worry about and are starting to subside. I bought a Kardia Alivecor, to check that I was not going into AF. Secondly, the migraines with Aura, which are a bit scary if you get them, but are nothing to worry about. Good Luck for 14th of October. Be patient as improvements come gradually Karim.

Hi. I had my first Ablation 16 days ago under a general rather than conscious sedation. I am a 52-year old female.

I was able to walk to the theatre and after a shot of fentanol was very relaxed before a mask was placed over my nose.

5 hours later I woke in recovery. Unfortunately my body temp and BP were very low due to the extensive freezing of all four Pulmonary Veins. I had difficulty with the incision in the left groin which wouldn't stop bleeding. This required a clamp and a longer than expected period of time laid flat. My back ached for days afterwards!

Unfortunately 6 hours later my BP dropped a touch lower and I vomited. After the Consultant checked me over and a portable eco-cardiograph undertaken, everything appeared normal.

After overnight observation I went home the next day. I was pretty tired and over the following 10-days found walking a difficulty due to very bruised thighs and slight hematoma in the left groin.

On day 3 I experienced an Arora Migrane in the afternoon lasting about 15 minutes. This also occurred on days 4 and 5. Pretty scary but thankfully this forum highlighted they can be normal due to puncturing between heart septum. I've not had anymore.

I pretty much did as instructed in week one - nothing. Week 2 much the same and I watched TV.

Day 11 I stated with a cough and tightness in the chest. Similar symptoms that I can only describe as the back end of a chest infection. Again this has subsided.

Day 12 I went for a 100 metre walk which was quite challenging and elevated my heart rate considerably. I've tried to keep this up and it's getting better, however I feel zapped of energy.

Day 16 my bruising is subsiding and I've progressed to a slight limp. My resting heart rate is around 64 but does bounce around. I have felt a few ectopics and flutters of AF particularly during the night but am hopeful. I generally know when I've done too much because I get an ache in the middle of my chest.

I guess it's only early days. I'd love to return to the gym but I've going to wait 6/8 weeks to give myself the best chance. I'm attempting to avoid stress (my trigger)! I remain on beta blockers and blood thinners which I hope I can ditch in the future.

Good luck on the 14th! I think everything I've been through will be worth it to regain some normality and I'd do it again!
