Thank u goldie - not too sure if the pharmacist was being over cautious about letting me purchase those but suggested that I see the dr before taking those. May have to just do it and hope that nothing in them reacts with other meds! π±π
Thank u. Deff off to get some. Many thanks for taking the time to get back to me. Really appreciate it π
Hi Lizie....maybe you should think about changing your nickname until it's sorted!!!.....on a more serious note, if they suggest antibiotics, I was told by the hospital to take Amoxycillin for a raging toothache - I'm also on apixaban but I don't take the others you mention. I was not aware of any problems but obviously you need to check, hope you feel better soon, I know it can be very upleasant.....keep drinking too, even though it will make you uncomfortable.....John
Thanks so much for your reply - and the comment about the name change even managed to put a smile on my grumpy face! π Lizzie who needs the loo too much at the mo! X
Hi Lizzie I was told by a Dr years ago the best thing to take for a UTI is bicarbonate of soda which most households have, a teaspoon in a ltr of water. You would need to check if there are contraindications with each drug you are taking .
Something else which helps, wrap a hot water bottle in a towel and put it between your knees it is very soothing ...
Many thanks for the advice. I'm over whelmed by all you kind people who have taken time to suggest remidies and advice , it's such a common ailment but horrible when your suffering. X
You should have an out of hours GP service. Ring your docs and they should have a number. Get treated asap as you don't want it to develop into a kidney infection. I did that once and it was awful.
If you are taking anticoagulants then I believe Cranberry is not advisable, read your list of do's/don'ts. Urine infections can be nasty, I get them regularly so see if they have a Walk In Centre near you or ring 111/NHS DIRECT and ask where you can be prescribed during weekend GP closures or sadly wait until Monday and see if you can get an appointment for your GP
I get them so often I bought a self testing kit, the same strips that the doctor/nurse uses so if I think I have an infection I test and take the appropriate action lol. Don't forget to take a sample with you taken first thing in the morning and mid flow, good luck.
Cranbery is OK with NOACs but not Warfarin. I'd suggest your infection should be investigated to obtain a proper diagnosis. Some infections can be very distressing and will be treated with antibiotics. I've never had a problem with antibiotics - when I was on Warfarin or now on Rivaroxaban. Hope you get some relief soon.
I second the recommendation for D-Mannose. You can find it on Amazon. If your infection is not very severe, try that first before antibiotics. You can also take it with antibiotics, but it usually clears things up without them. Dosage is important: start with 5 capsules of 500mg capsules 3 times a day the first day, 4 capsules 3 times a day on the second day, 3x3 times a day on the third and then one or two capsules 3 times a day until you feel no need. Continue with 1 capsule a day for maintenance.
Do you know if you can take if one is on Warfarin? Thank you!
Hi Lizie; I know that I'm the wrong sex but can I answer as I had a nasty UTI after a cystoscopy? Drink plenty of water. The jury is out on cranberry juice. UTIs can be persistant and may be resistant to some antibiotics, so you may be prescribed a different treatment if the first doesn't work. I recall that the dose can be influenced by your weight; my first prescription was for a woman a lot lighter than me! They can be caused by incomplete emptying of the bladder too.
Firstly, personal hygiene. Keep the area clean on a daily basis. Wash way from the ureter avoiding fragranced soaps or shower gel. Aqueous cream, or hypoallergenic soaps are good. Was the Bicarb of soda to be used as a soap substitute. If so rinse thoroughly. It can be drying out.
Secondly, Drink lots of water. I never got the cranberry thing because no one seemed to know about quantities.
Thirdly, if any sex is hot and sweaty a discret clean up post will help. If its with a man would he wear a condom. Are toys/aids kept clean? Would a trip to a Genito Urinary clinic be of assistace? it doesn't have to be local.
Paracetamol will help keep a temperature at bay and deal with the aches and pains.
