AF and increased urination.

Can AF increase urination? According to what I have read at:

encyclopedia.com/science/di...

It is possible because of the ANP (atrial natriuretic peptide) hormone that is released in the Atrial Wall of the heart when it is stretched(During AF).

I do not understand everything 100% but basically it looks like AF can make you urinate more. I do not know if it is just during AF, or if you had AF at some point.

In my situation I know that I drink a lot of water and also that I have had a urinary catheter a few times and wonder if it has "weakened" my bladder.

If there is anyone who may have had any AF - Increased urination connection please let me know.

Hi Janco- same for me. I don't know the science but I am weeing every 5 minutes seems like when I have an AF episode. I try and drink a big glass of water to counteract dehydration as that can also trigger AF. Deep joy!!

It was as a result of increased urination that I discovered I had AF - I was going 8 times a night some nights and my doctor referred me to a gynea clinic who discovered a small cyst which they duly took out. This did not stop the urination so I was then referred to a bladder specialist and he quickly told me there was nothing wrong with anything down there but that this was often a sign of heart trouble but as he was not a heart specialist could not tell me what.

At that point the AF got worse and I was then referred for this - but it had taken 1 year by then. I got the impression that there is a link but they are not sure what. Since my ablation this has stopped.

We have discussed this often on this forum. It is called " increased micturition." I can tell that I am having an episode of AF by my production of vast quantities of urine.

Hi jennydog

I read your post "AF, increased micturition & dehydration" and all the replies.

Very interesting and informative, it feels like I have made some sense of this weeing "thing" that I have had most of my life.

The positive is that it lets us drink lots of water.

Janco my chemistry isn't really up to this but the post mentions sodium. I read somewhere that flecainide ( my reliable anti arrhythmia) is a sodium channel blocker. Right, that's salt. We have all been told that we must reduce our salt intake BUT last week I read that this is nonsense and that we need salt for heart health. What to believe?????

If we are weeing a lot during AF are we losing too much salt? Do we need more or less?

Kind regards from Confused of North Wales.

Everything in moderation is my mantra.

Hi jennydog

I agree with Stinky1953 , everything in moderation.

Maybe too much salt intake is more of a general "warning".

According to what I know salt "keeps" water in your body, and the ANP helps water "out" (my very short and crude explanation).

So each one of us have to get the balance right.

Enjoy the balancing act!

Yes, always happens to me when AF starts.

It happens to me every night - I have to get up at least 4/5 times every night even if I don't drink after 6 pm and I wee for England! I am in permanent AF so happens every day - haven't had a decent night's sleep for over 15 years.

I saw a urologist about this recently and he said he cannot help me and said it was a hormone and my heart.

Thank you all, for the feedback!

I hear what ian16527 said that it goes back to normal after an attack, but I have an enlarged right atrium due to Tetralogy of fallot (TOF), a CHD.

Maybe this large atrium can also have an effect on ANP? because I am AF free for the past 3 years, but it feels like I urinate more than other people.

I will also try and find the other discussions on the forum about " increased micturition", and ask my doctor when I see him again.

Thx again, this forum is a goldmine of info!

Happens anytime my heart plays up. Every 2 minutes I have a full bladder. Tachycardia does this to me as well.
