copious urination during AF

I have recently noticed that during particularly bad episodes of AF , during the first couple of hours I pass loads of urine. I can have a really full bladder ever 15 minutes or so. the problem with this is that if I am settled quietly it all calms down a bit, but every time I have to get up to empty my bladder, it really agravates the heartrate.

has anyone else had this experience??

100% Normal 😄

Very common. There is an enzyme that the distressed heart secretes which tells the body to get rid of salt. It does this via the kidneys hence the excess micturation. (medical term for peeing a lot.)

During my last afib episode (Monday) this did not happen as it usually does. Although I still got the feeling of mild constriction in the upper chest and throat that I usually do this was much less noticeable than usual. Can I assume that my heart felt less distressed? It was also the shortest episode I have had for the last 4 years.

I don’t always have the ‘waterfall effect’. And sometimes I have had it without apparently being in AF although very tired. So I do think it’s more to do with heart distress than AF.

Thank you - that's interesting. I have had frequency outside of afib - I have a sensitive bladder due to scarring after 2 abdominal ops where they had to separate it from other bits! But it's not usually copious. It does make sense that other stressors to the heart could bring it on as well.

Hi, yes very annoying but although it seems wrong you still need to drink water to replace the fluid otherwise you will feel worse than necessary!

I have this often. I have suffered with paroxysmal afib for 10 years and regularly suffer the amazing amount of urine passed usually at night.

its a bit of a pain isnt it? just as you begin to relax and feel comfortible you have to go again!

It is indeed. Sometimes I don't even get a chance to pull up the covers. One night I lost 2k in weight which = 2 litres.

Yes, I do, every time. I once counted 13 trips to bathroom in the first hour and the next time I decided to measure how much I was passing - 5 pints. It's an exhausting start to an afib episode and have to make sure I have rehydration powders in the house.

Hi Wendy

Yes when I have gone to ER in attacks of AF/atrial tachycardia I had to P a lot!

It was a pain because I was hooked up to machines and they had to bring a potty heside the bed. I have always found this odd as well.

Yes. most of the forum has it happen I think.

You never really get used to it as it's so tiring.

All the best.

So interesting … my mother has SVT and in the past few years has been complaining about nocturnal urination and daytime leg weakness. Because of her age, 91, no one took her symptoms too seriously but since I was dx with PAF I realised her symptoms started with Metropolol. She didn’t even know she was on a BB! She’s under a cardiologist not EP and today we’re seeing a nephrologist as her sodium levels are well under range. If her kidneys are ok I’m going to suggest they check whether her SVT has morphed into atrial fibrillation as her symptoms are similar to my experience. That is, I’ll push to get her to a cardiac electrophysiologist.

Hi

Sounds ike you are overhydrating yourself.

Coffee, tea or any caffeine will 'aggravate' you to go.

Perhaps voluntary go every hour after hydrating.

Have you been checked for a urine infection?

I dont think so Joy, I dont do caffiene, and I always reduce my fluid intake after 6pm. I used to get urine tract infections years ago and I would recognise the symptoms of that. its very specific, always at the beggining of an episode of AF

Hi

At the point of 2am sore head and toilet in time which was diagnosed 5.30am stroke with AF I didnt make the toilet!

So that was all around AF.

Now after removal of TVT Johnson & J mesh last year I do have the stress. I go to the bathroom 1-2 hours.

Apparently a side symptom of stroke is urine infections.

Beyond having 'scolding urine ejecting, it is the upset stomach which tells me I have an infection somewhere. Even an infected tooth upsets the system.

Take care, JOY

yes normal for me for the first couple of hours of an attack. Then it calms off for the rest of the time. It’s sooo inconvenient if out and about
