A clear explanation as to why natural remedies are not recommended.

I was surprised to learn that anticoagulation only offers a 60% chance of stroke prevention.

Yep rothwell, nothing takes you back to your pre AF state, but think about it

You start at roughly 5 times the usual risk by being in AF, and anti-coagulation takes you down to roughly 2 times the usual risk.

Worth having in my view.

Be well

Thanks Ian ...I really love your positive attitude.. Am trying to adopt it. I read so much on this site about all the other illnesses people have as well as the AF that I do realise that I am lucky in many respects. Must stop thinking 'if only' I.e. if I weren't over 65 and female I wouldn't need to take an anticoagulant (which I hate taking) but will bear in mind your statistics re stroke reduction. Thanks again.

Thank you Dr Gupta once again for an extremely clear explanation of the differences in the ways of working of warfarin, aspirin and the herbal/spice/natural remedies

I just can't praise Sanjay Gupta enough. His clear explanations regarding AF and kindly, caring manner are unique and much needed by so many people. Thank you Steve for posting.

Very interesting, particularly as I made a curry last night with garlic, turmeric, ginger... eek...

You know I have often wondered why some people are so against taking anticoagulants which have been proved to work as Dr Gupta says yet are quite happy to put untested chemicals into their bodies in the name of natural remedies. As Beancounter said a few weeks ago most drugs started out as "naturally occurring" products which have merely been refined for a specific purpose. One can only assume that some base hatred of the pharmaceutical industry is behind it as the science definitely isn't from what the good doctor tells us.

Totally agree some people have this irrational hatred of pharma companies that are trying to help us, yet will happily support other far more profitable companies such as Facebook that add nothing to our lives. I wonder how many doctors who get patients insisting on 'natural cures' wish they could suggest deadly nightshade :-)

Excellent presentation, logically, honestly and scientifically argued. Thank you for posting this Steve.

Hi , I have taken Warfarin and am now on Apixaban, I am 61 with infrequent AF episodes with treatment for high blood pressure, which was never particularly high, and I have resented taking any anticoagulant, but watching Dr.Gupta's video which reiterates a greater stroke risk with co-morbidities I feel a bit more reassured that I am doing the right thing. I do still worry about bleeds but it must be in the back of our minds for many of us. I have often wondered if I could "get away" with ginger, turmeric etc. I now understand why this is not possible,so thanks Dr. Gupta for a very clear explanation. Still doesn't make me like taking anti coagulants but I can maybe not get so hung up on it. Best wishes Kath
