Almost the the end of our holiday in Cuba, I suffered a stroke, affecting my speech & nerve endings in right arm. Even though we had holiday insurance, we decided in catch the flight home 48 later. We caught a train home to Plymouth & went immediately the A&E. They did a CT Scan which showed at the left brain burst blood vessel affect my speech. They took me off Rivraban ( spelling affect difficult) and put me on Aspirin for 14 days, to be followed by Clopidogel. I idea my this happened to me ???

So very sorry to hear about your stroke Lastec1.However, you prob. made the right decision re. getting home ASAP. I had a small TIA some years ago ,rightsided ,and kept talking and writing from the sart....also tried to read. All were difficult...writing tiny and mispelt and taking garbled but within a short time it all ironed out. I did not have any brain bleeds so it was prob. easier for my body to 'accomodate'. Bu the doctor I saw first agreed it was a goo dway to go. Ask your Doc. as due to your symptoms it might not be what is good for you but it worked for me.It just everyone else around me ...esp. the none stop chatter.

Cant can't give any words of wisdom but just wanted to say glad you got back safe and are in good hands. Take care.

That's really bad luck, but could have been very much worse. Maybe you had an existing abnormal blood vessel in your brain to cause this. It does pose further problems to know how to prevent further strokes as Af ones are as you know embolic.

So sorry to hear this and do hope you recover quickly. No place like home in these circumstances is there. Feels much safer on home territory. Did you go to Derriford a and e, incidentally my cousin is an a and e doctor there.

Hope things improve quickly for you.

How absolutely awful for you. I'm not sure what I would have done in the circumstances.......probably not have gone to Cuba anyway but that's me!

Pleased you got home safely and in good hands.

Best wishes

Sandra

Sorry to hear about this Lastec. How are you feeling now, have you made a full recovery, or is your speech/thinking/body still affected?

Unfortunately, things like strokes just spring up from nowhere, along with all sorts of other conditions. It's why we have to make the most of each day, eat healthily and keep ourselves as well as we possibly can and of course do exercise in some form or other. I'm often guilty of failing in respect of those things mentioned at times.

We don't know what fate has in store for us and I guess a lot of it will happen whatever we do, but I can tell you I'm going to fight it and I'm sure you will too. Your story has spurred me on, just got to finish the sweets I'm eating then no more!

Big healing hug.

I am so sorry about your stroke. I, too, plan to go to Cuba after my first visit with a cardiologist. I see that you were taking Rivaroxaban which is classified as an anti-coagulant, and will be taking Clopidogrel, which is anti-platelet. I certainly am curious as to why the switch in your case.

Wishing to you all the best!! Can you obtain some professional rehab? It would surly make your recovery easier.

May you tell us somehing about the care you experienced at Cuba? We would like to travel but it is the aspect of beeing ill att foreign country what is most worrying.

So you had a stroke while on Rivaroxaban? And it was not ischemic but bleeding, so could it have been caused by the rivaroxaban? Did anyone say something about that?

My husband suffered two strokes. With good care and rehab a lot can come back.

I see you already had a brain bleed two months ago. Why would they put you on Rivaroxaban? My husband was told no NOAC or blood thinning because of previous brain bleed. He just takes aspirin 100 as a slight help.
