Travel to Cambodia

Hoping @beancounter may be able to answer this but maybe others have also spent time in Cambodia.

I am planning to spend up to a year in Cambodia from this summer. I only take warfarin so will probably buy a coagucheck but wondered if warfarin is available on prescription or to buy there.

Thanks

Alison

I'm sure you will hear from Beancounter. I tend to travel a lot in Europe and USA and because my INR reacted to differents diets, my GP was happy for me to change to a NOAC which made life so much simpler. I'm never away for more than a month normally, so I can take medication with me. I have no idea how you would obtain NOAC's in Cambodia, but I'm sure Beancounter could help there too. Sounds like a great adventure.....he may offer to be your bag carrier!!!......best wishes, John

Hi Alil

Yes I have travelled there several times, but never tried to buy warfarin, the real challenge in all the Asian countries is making sure you are buying real drugs and not fake to be honest. In Phnom Penh there is at least one Boots I seem to remember or maybe it was a Watsons, but I would stick to the branded pharmacies. If you are outside Phnom Penh or Siem Reap you are going to struggle a little.

Do you self test? if not, then I do recommend thinking about this if you are going for a year, and make sure you take enough testing strips with you, also remember that Bangkok is a very short (and cheap) flight away and there are several Boots in the airport. Warfarin is dirt cheap as a drug anyway, so depending on which way you are going to Cambodia, might be worth stopping in Thailand and buying six months supply.

But for all of that I love Cambodia, and I am jealous if you are going for a year, make sure you PM me when you go as I try and travel twice a year, and it might cost you a beer if I can make it out there

Be well

Ian

Thanks Ian, that sounds like good advice. We'll be based in Phnom Penh so Boots / Watsons sounds a useful place to know. I don't self test currently but that's my plan.

My husband has really fallen for the country and its people when he's been working there hence our big trip. I'll certainly let you know once we get there.

Thanks, Alison

An INR test in Cambodia at a lab or hospital would cost $5. So a coag meter is not worth the cost. NOAC very expensive would need preubsciption
