A slice of lemon in warm water always helped me but if it is iced water it is more likely the ice than the lemon to be the cause.

I was not drinking enough water on a daily basis so a friemd gave me a water imfusor. It holds 10 Oz of water and in the center there is a tube where you put whatever you want to infuse i used pieces of unpeeled lemons. Was delious, I kept it in the fridge and drank it constantly. A cew days later I started feeling my heart pound...really poind..I have afib but never a pounding heart. It was happening almost every hour and lastimg about 30 mins day and night This went on for two weeks! I was still drinking the lemon water. I could not figure what was going on...was it my med?...i stopped coffee even though that has never bothered me...

I was getting ready to call my cardiologist when I remembered, the only thing that was new in my diet was the lemon water. I stopped drinking it and almost instantly the poinding stopped and my heart settled down. So far it hasn't started acting up again.

This is really weird because lemons are suppose to help with palpitations. i checked the internet and didnt see any post about this happenings to anyone else. I don't know why it happened at all but it did.

i will wait and see if that was indeed the problem. So far, so good.

My guess would be that If it was very cold - straight from the fridge - it is more likely that it was the temperature of the drink causing brain freeze and disturbing your vagus nerve.

Fresh lemon juice can be very helpful for neutralising acid in the stomach and helping digestion.

The vagus nerve runs very close to the heart and vagal AF is well documented.

If you wanted you could easily test whether or not it was lemons or temperature by putting slice of lemon in hot water and sipping and then another time drinking fridge cold water.

We are indeed all different so it just could be for you it is the lemon, but it is easy to assume and links are not always causes.

Oh by the way - don't keep lemon infused water for more than a few hours! That it was days old could be the reason.

That's why I just use fresh lemon slice in cup or glass. I slice my lemons, cut in half, & put them in the freezer in a container then just add one half slice into every glass or cup of hot water, easy & convenient.

happened to me too. only happens when I drink cold lemonade.

Could it be to do withbeing full up with water, not the water itself? Probably not!!!

A gin & tonic with fresh lemon slices calms my fluttery heart down - but that could be to do with the alcohol helping calm me down after a busy day at work 😂 (Only 1 mind!)

I hope you have found your trigger - it's trial & error I'm

afraid.

Best wishes

Anything citrus or acid, including lemon water in this case, is apt to give me issues due to the impact on the gastric complex - quite recently, I was having daily runs of palpitations that I eventually connected to some new relish that I was eating and which I discovered had quite a few acid promoting ingredients including a lemon extract, vinegar and assorted spices - once I dropped that, the palpitations disappeared

I make sure I use unwaxed lemons and wash them to make sure there isn't and preservative on them. I did have a problem when I had lemons put in water when out at a bar/function so decline lemon in G&Ts etc now except at home.

Thanks for all the replies. The palpitations haven't returned so it seems as if the lemon water was the culprit. I am going to try that test that was suggested. Will be interesting to see the results. I also kept the water in the refrigerator taking it out only to refill it. Another no no.

Its amazing how helpful everyone is. I so appreciate all the responses. This one had me. Another twist on this event, I have no problems with Lemonade.

We can find triggers in the strangest places I guess.

Lemonade can be a problem and actually contains quite a bit of sugar or worse still Aspartame. Try soda instead. Traditionally add lime but you can add many other things such as lemon. Very refreshing.

So true! Fortunately I make my own lemomade and use raw brown sugar but not much. You are so right, that stuff they sell in the store is filled with artificial flavors and tons of sugar. I actually wonder if there are any lemons in it at all 😄

PeterWh profile image
PeterWh in reply to Upbeat2000

I suspect that some makes actually only have lemon flavouring in them and no real lemon. I twigged the absence of any real fruit on a completely different product.

With all the GMO's and chemical enhancements in food its a wonder we aren't in AF constantly. Sad to say.

I keep a bottle of unopened water in the fridge. It's my first port of call when in AF. Sometimes it stops the AF but often then have fast pulse (130) for up to 12 hours.

I do the same thing except my water is not cold. Whenever I think an attack is coming on and sometimes in the middle of an attack, I drink a glass of water. Usually works.

Coconut water is my go to drink! Natural source of Potassium & Magnesium, I'm instantly rehydrated. Dehydration is a major trigger of Abif for me😄

I find lime juice starts my AF. I try and avoid any lime in drinks or dressings now. Lemon juice seems ok.

Did stopping the lemon help?

I'm having palpitations and have been having hot lemon water. I've read a link with vagus nerve stimulation and increase palpitations. I've also has 3 days of trimethoprim so not sure what causing it!

Just seen this thread and am reassured to find I am not the only one whose AF seems to be triggered by lemon juice! I had been feeling fine, then made up a honey and lemon cold remedy for my daughter. She wouldn't touch it ! So I had a few sips and Bam!! I am in AFagain. Will avoid in future.

Good luck all

I've always experienced this. Not sure why but when I first discovered juicing I made a drink with half a lemon juiced and that was the first time I noticed it: thought it could have been just the reaction my body was having to juicing itself. However I later realized it was only on days my juices included lemon. Ever since discovering this I can't have over a slice of lemon without having a similar reaction. Its terrible bc I love lemon!

Just googled for lemon water and palpitations. I couldn't figure out why I was having the palpitations. They had stopped and I noticed until today I went to the store and brought two lemons and made my fresh lemonade with stevia. And boom they started again. I went to wash dishes and noticed my lemon juicer and started to think... and put it together. And found this site. Wow I'm done juicing with lemons!

I've recently felt palpitations and was very frequent and strong and I also had just added lemon water to my routine, no increase in caffeine or stress, no past issues, and now that I think of it , I'm sure that may have been what causes them so I can relate to your concerns...

This happens to me too! I was drinking Pellegrino cans two years ago, and getting heart flutters and palpitations. I remembered my dad had a problem with lemon slices in his cocktails - not sure how he figured that one out - giving him palpitations, and he stopped putting on a lemon slice and they went away. I have up the pellegrino and mine stopped too. But two years later and I forgot and was drinking Polar brand star fruit lemonade seltzer water for the past few days, and they started up again. So odd!

Wow, for a week I have been dealing with abnormal NONSTOP heart palpitations and couldn't figure it out and this morning it hit me the only thing I added was warm lemon water first thing in the morning! It's so beneficial I'm so sad this could be the culprit! Strange but so glad I found this page as its the only one I kind find with lemon water and the heart having issues!

I have indeed experienced this! I was beginning to think I was the only one! I have been experiencing crazy palps/PVC's for almost 2 months and for that time have also been adding lemon and lime to my water. I have been really trying to clean up my diet and have been starting each day with a large glass of lemon or lime water and have been steadily increasing the amount of juice I add (fresh fruit, juiced without the rind) to my room temp water. I never thought about it causing a problem! Then it hit me.....I also have problems with vitamin C supplements and with ascorbic acid additives. I didn't drink the lemon water today and have had far less fluttering, I'm hoping tomorrow it will be even better!! Have you ever figured out why this has happened to you? I would love to chat with you and compare notes!!

Hi Joy, I started having really bad heart palpitations for about 2 months now and it's been scaring me to death and keeping me up night and day just trying to explain to others how I feel. I literally feel as though I'm vibrating from the inside out. I even went to the Dr and had a full blood panel and discovered I was low on vitamin D, so I am now taking several supplements that I hoped would help but 2 weeks in and still this odd sensation. Well, guess what, for the last 2 months, daily, I have been having 1 organic lemon squeezed in a mug of warm water and of course I thought I was doing something healthy. Well yesterday, I ran out of lemons, so I didn't have my usual cup and then today after I got lemons I still didn't make my cup. I even mentioned to a Friend, that my internal vibes, heart pals, pounding was way less. I then said to her, do you think it could be that the lemon a are causing this because I think that this feeling started around the same time as I began this new lemon water routine and yesterday & today without the lemon water I had improved. Then tonight, just before going to bed, I got the bright idea that I needed to have my cup, um BAD IDEA, VERY BAD, within a few minutes the scary feeling was back, OMG! Thankfully, I listened to my gut and managed to put two & two together, which led me here. I'm staying away from lemons and will let you know how it goes. Please keep in touch. How are you feeling now, better I hope? HUG~~~♡

I have been feeling much better! I have stayed away from lemons and anything containing critic acid or ascorbic acid. I think I am really sensitive to food additives and will be taking steps to get tested for such. I’m hoping things just get better and better. I’m so glad you found out what the cause of your Heart symptoms was! It is incredibly scary!! I would love to stay in touch and compare notes. I have an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, do you know if you are autoimmune in any way?

I just started experiencing this while following a Hoshimoto's protocol diet. The first thing every morning it has you drinking hot lemon water. My heart is not happy and it did scare me a bit. No more lemons, no matter how yummy they are.

I had a similar reaction to CBD oil, another thing that is suppose to lower blood pressure. Sigh

I cannot take lemon or lemon juice in my diet. My heart beats increase to more than 100 per minute.

It happened to me too. only happens when I drink lemon infused water. I drink a glass of warm water in the morning with a few drops of lemon. I went through a series of tests and eventually found out that it was lemon water. As soon as I stopped adding lemon to my water in the morning all stoped. The lemon was not much, it was a few drops, but it had an effect on my heart beat. I will never drink it again!

I added lemon water to my daily routine in an attempt to dissolve a kidney stone and to help raise my GFR number. I have afib. After starting my lemon water, I started having heart palpitations so bad I couldn't sleep. One night while trying to decide whether I should get to the ER, I started to remember what I had started doing different. That's when I thought about the lemon water. I literally rolled over, grabbed my phone and Googled "can drinking lemon water trigger afib". And that's why I'm here. This site popped up and boy am I glad. I immediately stopped the lemon water and the constant heart banging stopped. I'm bummed because I had labs done this week and my GFR number had improved. I really want to know what it is about lemon that causes this. Has anyone heard anything? Btw, I'm very happy to be a part of the health unlocked family.
