AF and Palpitations

morning everyone, have just sent a message to Gillybean 1. Sorry if you receive wrong message don’t know what went wrong there.

Anyway had a bout of palpitations last night, they started at about 7 I think. Have had palpitations before but these seemed different. More noticeable I think. Anyway I was gardening and I bent over and had like a blood rush to my head. Carried on watered the garden came in and checked my pulse. It was racing not extremely high. But higher than normal. After an hour decided to take two flecanide. (Have previously checked this out with my doctor and he has ok it.) luckily my pulse came down after a couple of hours but could still hear my heart loudly. Had some supper and came to bed. Everything is fine now, pulse is 69 but palpitations were strange last night. I have had a lot of anxiety this week. Probably been doing too much as in the throws of moving house.I did eat four of those flat meringues. I thought perhaps too much sugar all at once. I did also take one 2mg diazepam yesterday morning as I felt I was going to have a bout of crying. Then took the dogs out for a long walk to clear my head. Was it a mixture of everything that caused the palpitations. Thanks,

G'day Gillybean123,

You know - the start of my AF was my bending over, seated in a low chair and shredding some papers immediately after breakfast. After that I began to feel unwell, like I had man flu, then my BP dropped from around 136/80 ish to 76/50 in a few hours and then A & E where AF was diagnosed. I have now learned that the bending process probably aggravated in some way my vagal nerve because from then on foods and ingredients became the trigger for future AF events. Weird.

John

Hi there, thanks for reply, you think you know everything about your AF then something different happens.

That is exactly right ............ just when I think I've cracked an issue that arises .... something comes along and blows me outta the water. That is also the value of a form like this where one can read of others experiences .... and hopefully learn something.

That’s like me. I had them again last night and I was just watering the garden. They didn’t last so long. Have just messages my doctor. Can’t understand why I have got palpitations but my heart isn’t racing.

If I ate 4 meringues, which are loaded with sugar, I'd be guaranteeing myself a night of constant arrythmia.

Something very similar happened to me when I reached down to get my grandson a toy. I ended up in A &E with very difficult symptoms.

Hi Gillybean...i possibly only have tachycardia not AF but episodes often start with me bending down or turning my head to side which activates vagus nerve. Also too much sugar alone can start episode. The combination of both is almost certainly the trigger. Episodes can last for hours.

Consultant at hospital asked me what started them with me. At that time it was sugar/chocolate. He said sugar is top trigger. But everybody is different oh yes and triggers can change over the years.

I have cut back from 2 caffeinated teas a day to one and have found that i am having fewer tachycardia episodes. Hopefully this conti ues but you never know with this condition but fingers crossed.

Hi there, I thought the vagus nerve was to help stop AF. But have read about it starting it off a couple of times on here lately. So when you say episodes can last for hours do you mean the palpitations last for hours. I must admit I don’t like the feeling. Does it make you tired?

Sorry for late reply Gilly. I only have tachycardia which is a rapid heartbeat going from 60 bpm to 130 bpm with turn of head, bending over etc. If i catch it at start and do a vagal maneuver i sometimes manage to stop it. If not they can last for 2 to 6 hours. Never varying pace. When i have an episode I dose up on about 1000 mg of magnesium which sometimes helps. But with these conditions usually nothing works twice unfortunately.

Cheery consultant said it will progress into AF and once or twice my kardia device has stated possible AF.

No i dont feel dizzy but do not feel my usual self. I lose strength which probably caused by BP falling to around 75/60 returning to 110/60 when its gone.

I have found cutting from 2 cups of weak caffeine tea to 1 and walking 5 to 6 miles 5 days a week has helped me tremendously. Exercise has never been a trigger for me.

Good luck Linda

Is the weather still hot where you live? I'm in the USA and it's been very hot here. I've noticed more palpitations since it turned hot. I think some others here on the forum have complained about that too. Plus anxiety from you moving? Anxiety gets me too.Take care and be safe.

Hi there, yes it is still very hot all week apparently. Just been to see doctor as I haven’t had palpitations like that before. He said that I was in AF. And that I will have them. I said is it ok to have them for 6 or 7 hours and he said yes. That’s all I wanted to know. He said there is no need to worry every time I have them as they are ok. He said find a cool peaceful place and chew some ice cubes. ,!!!!!!
