Ablation number 2

Well after seeing my EP at Westmead yesterday, I am up for another ablation on the 4th August. Why so long, that is the list, he wants me on Warfarin for 3 weeks before and 4 weeks after then I can go back onto my weaker Plavix. He also wants me to start on Solatol.

Any thoughts on this drug, I have heard some nightmarish things about it.

Hi soozie. Good news on teh second ablation. From memory are you in Australia?

In UK Sotalol has been taken off the list of recommended drugs for AF. I am not sure of all the reasons but at our conference last year one consultant described it as a "nasty" drug. If you are worried , why not write to your EP and ask him in the light of UK experience.

Yes Bob I am an Aussie. I already have a back up plan which will be the Verapamil. It worked well before the other ablation and I tolerated it, I asked the EP about this other drug and will give it a go, but plan b is to go off it and back onto the other.

It is all short term anyway, just to get me from stopping the continual hospital visits until the 2nd ablation.

He informed me that a pace maker was not out of the question but we need to try this first.

We are still virgins here, so if it is no good there then it is going to be a long while before anyone sees the light bulb here.

Great news regarding the ablation but a shame you have to wait so long. I'd try and say it will go quickly but with you experiencing AF so often August must seem like an eternity away!

I assume the Solatol is a short term measure depending on how the ablation goes?

I've been on Amiodarone for 4 years (200 mg down to 100 mg last month) and when it was first prescribed I clearly remember the nurse telling me it was a scary drug and to work as hard as I could to reduce the dosage or move to another medication.

Seems like the more effective the anti-arrhythmic is the worse the side effects.

Your right in so far as the drug is short and depending on the outcome of the ablation may never or at least hopefully for 10 years have to take it again. Yeah, 3 months is a long time but we only have to specialist EP's in NSW that do the work and there are a lot of people needing the op.

I just chill and wait, continue on the journey of madness until it can be fixed, well, hopefully.
