Steamroom

I am going on holiday next week.

The hotel has a spa. Does anyone know if its alright to use the steam room and sauna,

I thought I had read somewhere, it wasn't a good idea, to use them, if you have AF. Thanks everyone.

When I went to the Romans baths at Bath there was a notice saying that people with heart rhythm problems shouldn't use the steam rooms but I'm not sure why. X

Been going to the hot tub since after my stents and being diagnosed with Afib. Dr. told me as long as I did it moderately I should be ok. I don't stay in as long as I used to..I do about 10 minutes get out for about 8 go back in for 10. I just make sure I cool off between dips in the tub.

Go cautiously, I found that my tolerance for hot tubs, steam rooms etc deteriated so I only used them for about half the time I used to. I have just come back from a spa and was in the steam room but used the ice fountain to cool down quickly, you could, and should, use a cold shower. Again individual and I guess the warnings are there to cover themselves.

I can never remember which but one is supposed to make your blood pressure rise- ? the connection??

Also, if you have less oxygen intake it might not be good??

Hi,

Just joined a local Gym which my GP has referred me to...The instructor said definite no no to sauna, steam room or cold showers reason being as I have AF ( silent at the moment following Ablation) it was to dangerous and risk of an adverse reaction of the Heart muscle....

I don't usually do as I am told but on this occassion I have complied!!!

I have a hot tub at home which I no longer use. My cousin who is a sister in a and e and gp said a definte no it raises blood pressure which in my case certainly affects af. Even a really hot shower. I use to enjoy a really hot bath but havent since last August just showering. I can live without spa etc just as long as my heart is under control which is the best gift for me. Take medical advice from your gp have a good time.

Well I'm glad this turned up, it hadn't even occurred to me that a sauna/steam room might cause problems... I love my hot baths and they have never caused af, but I guess the sauna is cranking things up to another level... Good warning!

Hi Lis

I also love my hot baths, do you think that we shouldn't have them too hot for fear of bringing on the dreaded AF? I Haven't noticed that my palpitations are particularly bad after a hot bath but I do wonder if I should make do with tepid showers!! Do you feel palpitations after a hot bath?

Thanks.

in reply to Kimmieblue

I suspect it's another of these things that is really individual - if it doesn't set us off, then I don't see why we should shiver in a tepid bath! If I find at any point that things change, I will have to revise my thinking I guess, but till then, taps at Warp Factor Ten, Mr Sulu! :)

The only thing that causes me to have AFibs is sleeping! Have PAF and if I have them it's always about half hour or so after going to sleep. Hot baths and / or exercise don't seem to play any part.

Thank-you all.

I think I may just enjoy the pool, and let my husband, enjoy the spa.

Thank-you for all the advice.

My local council-run facility advises not to use steam room or sauna if you are on anti-coagulants. Spa is OK.

It's one of these "horses for courses" things. I use my hot tub most days, Max 20 mins, and am better for it. Reduces the other aches and pains from creaky joints etc. and helps keep the stress levels down, but my BP is OK and it has never triggered an AF episode. Also had an enjoyable hotel spa break for a Christmas present and used both the steam room and sauna carefully with no ill effects, but didn't stay in either for too long.

Mine's the lying down, left side, eating too much in the evenings, 3am watch out or else AF!!

Just shows how individual it is and how we have to learn our own limitations.

Hi,

I've been having daily saunas and steam roomsfor half my life now. There is mixed medical opinion on the use of saunas etc., but like everything else in life "everything in moderation". I'm more scared of my wife finding out I've been using them although we we have just ordered one of those shower/steam room, with her approval. Just hope when it's installed she doesn't tell me I'm not using it, be just my luck.

I saw a warning on the side of a hot tub I was about to use when on holiday a couple of years ago .. People with heart problems shouldn't use it!

I decided to risk a little dip with no ill effects but then googled it and the explanarion is that the warm water/steam/sauna makes the blood vessels dilate and this in turn causes the problems..

I sometimes had a faster heartbeat after a hot bath so tend to stick to showers now. But I think it's down to the individual!
