Critical Illness Insurance

Has anyone ever had any success with getting critical illness insurance? I was told in 2005 that it wasn't worth trying to claim it but now I see arrythmmia and af being classified under heart failure banner so I am wondering whether to have another go. It would make the hugest difference to my life if I could claim.

Hi Lizwright

Might be a tough one, obviously depends on the wording of your policy, and most policies now are very specific about what constitutes critical illness, this is Legal and General's wording, but you need to examine your own insurance companies wording first.

Good luck

I doubt it too but I think I might try. All this talk on here about af being progressive and although as you know I am a cheerful bunny, I do feel that I am getting a lot tireder than I used to be and breathing is getting worse. They can always say no can't they? I have other issues too.

I can't imagine how AF could ever be considered a 'critical illness' Liz. Apart from the stroke risk if not anticoagulated, it is a comparatively benign condition - certainly not life threatening.

Clearly you have a different version to mine - it certainly hinders what I can do even though I do push the boundaries every day. I am looking at considerable medication for the rest of my life and a resting heart rate of 100 plus with medication. If there was any chance of getting some money so I didn't have to work quite so hard, that would make a massive difference to me.

Nope. Same version Liz, restrictive at times certainly and medication for the rest of my life too. But it's hardly a 'critical illness' - unless you've got other more serious things going on. I don't want to appear unsympathetic Liz but if you are successful in achieving a payout, it would explain why insurance premiums nowadays are going through the roof......

If you don't try you don't get and it isn't going to get any better. Only worse, even though I carry on with life as much as I can including working. So I don't mean to be down beat as I am not usually but to me it is fairly critical. And looking at some of the illnesses mentioned in my policy, they are things that are liveable with.
