hi all . is aspirin an anticoagulant ??
Hi Moggdog
No aspirin is not an anti coagulant, it's an anti platelet drug, works differently completly to anti-coagulants.
For pure AF it's about as useful as a chocolate fireguard, and it is not a stroke preventer.
However there are circumstances when AF is combined with particularly calcified passages of the heart that a small dose aspirin can be used usually alongside the anti-coagulant, utilising it's anti platelet properties.
Tell your GF that's a medium latte please

Ha, wish my GP believed that! Trouble is if you look at the NICE guidelines for AF they suggest aspirin for low-risk people. How you get round that, I don't know.
Sorry if I should know this, but is there a definite link between AF and strokes that would require the taking of anticoagulant medication? Can you point me towards explanations of this?
Hi plm
Yes undoubted, fully documented and just about the most serious side effect of AF.
You can google it anywhere and find out about it but here's one

Cardio tole not strong enough need Warfarin or new anti coagulants Apaxin in my case
Makes you wonder why there are still doctors who believe that aspirin will protect AF sufferers from a stroke. Aspirin is given for various heart problems -with an anti coag too in some cases- but anyone who has AF needs an anti coag. Read up and print out all info regarding anti platelets and anti coagulants and discuss with doctor/cardio.

Get off that asprin and take the anti coag's. I had a doctor that wanted to treat my asthma with valium? Which was an old remedy as they thought it was caused though panic attacks. What was the worst thing he was not a very old doctor I moved to a proper practice. (this was back in the 1970's)
I went to ER once with very bad AF attack where and the let me chew two aspirin .
Don't understand what for since I'm already on anticoagulant all the time
My Cardiologist also placed me on Aspirin, as I was a low risk for stroke. However, all evidence suggests that it is not sufficient to give the protection needed, and after much perseverance, I am now on Dibagatran for Blood thinning.

This is from an american site quite good reading as it does mention why it works for one thiong but not for others
