Has anyone here had an ablation at my age ( 81) ? I've started to get AF episodes again. After having a cardioversion over two years ago

I saw some one in London three years ago and he said to have a cardioversion first which worked for a period . Anyone with some bright ideas?

Hello Terjo,

I am in the UK and saw one of our top London consultants last year. I am nearly 80 nd was told age is no barrier as long as you are generally healthy. However you do have to have tried and been unable to tolerate an anti arrhythmic drug before you can be considered for ablation.Hope this helps.

Thankyou for your reply, stormcloud. I've been on Flecanide for two and a half years and tried loads of meds that made me worse, the meds were for hypertension. I'm on asprin now, I took warfarin before and after the cardioversion .

Have you had an ablation recently? The electrophysiologist said he would do it when I saw him two years ago but to try the cardioversion first which has been fine until recently . I just wanted to know what it was like for someone older. Terjo

No I haven't had an ablation yet but considering it as I can't tolerate meds. Problem is I need to be on an anticoagulant for three months prior to ablation

and I can't take warfarin and not too sure I want to take one of the newer anticoagulants.

Hi stormcloud,

I have been promised a cardioversion but have been told that it may not work - and if it does, may not work permanently. (a bit like Terjo). Apparently my age (75) and the fact I have a leaky valve, work against me. Interested when you say you are unable to take Warfarin. What ill effects did you experience?

Was it successful ? It's what I'm thinking if I get the AFs close together like I did this summer but cross fingers I've been ok for over three weeks. Thanks. Terjo
