Vitamin b12 shots for fatigue?

Gimmishelter profile image
41 Replies

Has anyone here tried vitamin b12 shots for fatigue. I find the simplest tasks such as mowing the lawn or going for a walk result in me having to sit down for some time to recover. I have heard of vitamin b12 shots being helpful but not in the PCa context.

I don’t take shots but rather take it orally. I believe you only need shots if you are very low and show pernicious anema often identified by a sore tongue. Since many of us avoid red meat, you may be deficient like many vegans. I take it occasionally and it might very well help and should do no harm. Good luck!

Thanks. I don't eat red meat at all and chicken and fish occasionally. perhaps that might be the problem.

If you don't eat red meat, eat that beautiful yellow fin tuna that you have down there.High on proteins and minerals and really tasty.

May I suggest instead of going to self medication have your blood tested and do a full screen. Replacing one vitamin with no analysis is not the answer

Good adviceif you can get the doctor to do the test. All too often, the insurance won’t pay for it unless there are symptoms. Others have noted that some studies show higher risk for getting PCa. Certainly could be true but what can increase your risk doesn’t mean it will promote cancer that is already there. If anybody has a study showing it promotes existing PCa please share.

Available at pharmacies? I must look out for them. Got an appointment with oncologist in 3 weeks and will see what she thinks.

Buy them on Amazon as I do.

since too much B12 increases prostate cancer risk, how do you decide how much too take?

Get a blood test to see if you are deficient. If so, you probably need injections, not pills.

People become B12 deficient usually only because of a specific disease, pernicious anemia.

It is possible that an extreme long term vegan could become B12 deficient because B12 is only present in animal meats, although some yeast also contain it. As TA says, you can get a blood test.

There is an old aphorism about B12 injections: "there are three stages of mental deterioration in physicians. First, he gives B12 shots to his patients who complain of fatigue. Second he believes they work. Third, he takes them himself".

Complained to my oncologist about the same. Ran some tests on thyroid and B12. I was low on B12 so he put me on a B complex supplement just last week. Too early to tell if any immediate benefit, but if it's low - it's low and should be addressed. Expect to eliminate a good bit of it through very bright yellow urine. As you probably know, our bodies can only absorb so much of any nutrient at a time and anything else is eliminated.

Mowing the lawn put an absolute zap on me last Spring. It was scary. I thought it was my heart. Ran tests with Cardiologist and all is good. Told me to 'keep doing what I'm doing'.

So, it's got to be the meds. Yeah, I just turned 60 - so what! I've always been pretty active - running, biking, working out, etc. These meds have disproportionately altered our chemistry. Need to just keep on keepin' on and plow through it best you can!

Thanks to all for the feedback. Looking forward to my MO's views.

Hey and yes here we are at vitamin and mineral deficiency suit, and replenishment is crucial to energy levels especially since we are taking meds that actually reduce this levels, so yes to vB12 and Vit D cholecalcif which address deficiencies in energy, brain fog, tiredness etc. Getting it natural requires eating a lot of veggies, beans or legumes, grapes and melons with seeds, I like to stay away from pills much as possible because they may address one issue and cause another through elevation of intake once your body adapts abs requires higher doses. Week light and love bro. Cheers

Does any item in yr list provide either vit B12, . . . or the hormone 'vit D' ? I think not ... ! 🤔❓😐

( Further, the following may be of interest, given the info in yr profile:

1). The underlying biochem for blood glucose issues is comprehensively described in the Ytbe vid "The Bittersweet Truth" - well worth a watch, ... and,

2). hormone "vit D" biochem, esp as given it's intricacies in a range of chronic conditions - including 'sarc' - can be found at chronicillnessrecovery.org . . . as one starting point ! Both, pro-hormone, AND active hormone levels matter, it said ! ).

All the best, ... in yr aims to gain some relief/improvement, in this transient mortal form !

Vitamin B12 is said to be exclusively from meat & dairy products, & even so the amounts per serving varying a great deal: the organ meats - heart, liver, kidneys - are said to generally have far higher concentrations. However, even the richest sources may be insufficient to effectively correct a LONG term, & severe B12 deficiency ( 'B12d') which in the FIRST instance is assessed by signs & symptoms: e.g. there's a B12d 'calculator' at b12d.org

Most fruits will ( - almost invariably!) fuel HI, as SO clearly explained in the Ytbe vid given above: not ALL 'fruit & veg' as a broad category are EQUAL when it comes to restoring & maintaining health.

All the best, ... to you, & all readers, in search for better HEALTH !

I've kept my B12 above 1000 for several years consuming a vitamin smoothy. It does help with fatigue and alertness for me.

Best to you,

My oncologist, Dr. Sartor says prostate cancer loves B12. He strongly advised against it.

Hmm I would listen to doc, and do my research there is likely a combination of vitamins and minerals combined to offer the best protection and prevention, I say so because dis ease. IS mineral and vitamin deficiency, clinicians KNOW this but are NOT trained nutritionist with an MD. I say do your research and consult this so good THAT knowledge.

I’m just sharing what I was told by one of the top prostate cancer docs in the country.

SsgCulldelight profile image
SsgCulldelight in reply toEdBar

Kool that's why you gotta do your research and they did tell you to mind your diet, give suggestions to you as to what mineral, metals and vitamins you can take in conjunction with your meds, get a holistic opinion, and get what you need because even the top doctors in this field do NOT focus on diet, one because they Know you can heal yourself but it takes time discipline commitment and sacrifice, they are NOT taught that in me school referring to diet. Ask them, they'll tell you you don't because they do not. They are to push and suggest meds, and as we know meds don't cure anything. Hope that helps in your quest for relief. Cheers friend, and I'm not knocking the docs for doin what they do, I just Know there are better ways to desk with our ailments. Love n light brother.

After 2 years of Eligard and Zytega my blood tests indicated low iron and B12. My OC started me on B12 in injections and iron infusions. My numbers are getting better but it is a slow process. I have noticed an increase in energy. I've had 2 iron infusions maybe more in the future depending on blood test results in March. Also continuing B12 shots monthly through June.

I have no T and under Dr Schmidt’s care I have as much energy as before PCa. For example, yesterday I did a dry sauna/cold plunge for 45 minutes, lifted light weights for 30 minutes, walked for 30 minutes and raked leaves for 80 minutes. I’m 63 years old.

It's good that you're in a work out mood..... so maybe you can fill in your Bio. All info is voluntary but it helps you and helps us too. Thank you and Keep posting.

suggest you take tests for your vitb12, iron/ferritin, and TSH/t3free levels. As to citb12 supplementation titrate up till vitb12 blood level is normal but on the lower side.

I had robotic surgery by Dr. Arieh Shalhav at the University of Chicago in 2011. No positive margins, lymph nodes not involved, all good. My PSA for years was 0.01 Then, feeling some fatigue, I started taking B12 for more "energy". My PSA went up to 0.10 When I stopped taking B12, my PSA dropped back down to 0.01 Here's a link to two meta-analysis studies and a recommendation from prostate.net not to take B12. Other studies have shown mixed or inconclusive results, but I'm just sharing my own experience :

when I found out I had prostate cancer at 62 years old I had been on a very strict plant based diet for 3 years. When I started seeing MO's and RO's for treatment they informed me that my B12 was low and affecting my red blood cell count. I started eating 8 to 10 ounces beef liver cooked in olive oil in a skillet 3 times per week and my blood tests worked out fine after that

Same here, beef liver has helped me improve marginally low RBC counts after radiation treatment five years ago.
