hi, my husband (56yrs) has extensive spread to hips, one more than the other. He’s exhausted all treatment options but is well apart from pain to bones. We are in the uk, diagnosed 2017 (already spread to bones). He’s met with orthopaedic consultants who have suggested that he can have an emergency hip replacement. Obviously there are major risks, the main being a high risk of infection. Has anyone had a hip replacement with this level of extensive spread? Thanks Jo x
hip replacement : hi, my husband (56yrs... - Advanced Prostate...
hip replacement
My husband’s hip broke clean in two due to the high level of metastases. He was in sheer agony. They replaced it and he has recovered well. It was a complicated surgery and they had to bring in a specialist to do it, but it is possible.
in June of this year I had to have the left ball replaced, but they saw the cancer in my right femur and wouldn’t replace the left without pinning the right saying that it would break if they didn’t pin it. Got along pretty good in the hospital and there therapy, then home therapy. But all the sudden at week 8-9 I turned to walk and something popped. The right pinned femur had broken a piece of bone off the top and put me down. Now 8-9 weeks later I have started therapy again to walk. I’ve lost all muscle mass in both hips now and having to rebuild from scratch. I wish you luck as I felt great before the break Never give in Warrior
I have advanced PCa but not bone metastases. I had a hip replacement and to forestall potential problems the surgeon used a larger than standard shaft in the femur and used bone cement. Both things he said he might not do otherwise. My hip pain was mostly due to a bone fragment in the joint but loss of cushioning material was also involved. Oedema (mild) has been the lasting side effect.
I am age 66 and only have a few bone mets but my largest is located in my left acetabulum. It was radiated 12 yrs ago and again 2.5 yrs ago, likely causing necrosis and some pain. I had a total hip replacement 9 months ago and have had a very good recovery. The surgery did NOT remove the bone met in the acetabulum, but I do have less pain in my hip. I hope this is of some help to you.
