My husbands cancer has transformed to this very aggressive, virulent cancer. He has experienced what I call “cry out loud”, “foot stomping “ bone pain and was recently hospitalized for 17 days before they got it under control. While in the hospital, they did two rounds of radiation (5 days each round) to 5 spots (first round two spots and second round three other spots) on his spine which they believed to be cause of significant pain. He also had a nerve block. Currently on 30 grams oxycodone every 4 hours. And has two 100 m fentanyl patches.

Very weak from being in the hospital and now sleeps a lot with no appetite. I’m giving him protein drinks and trying to get him up to walk several times/day but it’s a struggle. I feel like he might be over medicated, but I also don’t want him to be in that out if control pain again.

Going through second round chemo this coming week if his blood levels are good

I coukd use any advice from others who may have gone through this. What have you found helpful in dealing with the pain, getting them to eat, etc. Also, I know the prognosis is not good. I do better if I know what’s ahead.

The radiation does reduce the pain. Usually you will reduce the pain meds to a level that just controls the pain and avoid higher doses. Staying in bed and no exercise results in a poor prognosis.

Morphine is infinitely titratable, meaning he can always take more as long as he increases the dose slowly enough.

Although it's very hard to stand by and watch, eating more will feed the cancer faster than it feeds his healthy tissue. Cancer is growing fast and will steal any nutrient he eats. Cachexia may be the body's way of protecting itself.
