I know xgeva is given to prevent bone loss when one is osteoporotic but does it also serve any purpose also as a medicine for bone mets ?

is Xgeva given for bone density or also bone met treatment
It serves no purpose in bone met treatment. That was proven in two major clinical trials.
Just given to prevent osteoporosis, which can be a side effect of Lupron.
Hello Tinkudi, I have had osteoporosis for many years. If you are worried about your Dad having too many chemicals going into his body you might want to look at pure Glucosamine, no additives.
I have used it for many years and my bone density has actually increased. The same laboratory carried out the tests years apart. The doctors didn't understand why and I haven't told them.
I hope that there is some improvement in your Dad's health.
Thank you. Can you tell me which brand you use. Was the bone density increase confirmed on dexa ? Can you tell me what your T score was ?
Hello, at this moment I don't have the other information to hand. The two scans were done at the same clinic, a monitoring exercise before having a replacement knee.
Hope it helps
Is that OTC? I know there are various glucosamine supplement varieties.
Hi dhccpa, I had to look that up 🤔.
Yep I got this on amazon, I've read on here to avoid chondrin, this variety is pure and good quality.
Hope this helps, good luck 👍
Thanks
Welcome
How long did it take to make a positive difference for you? Any side effects?
Hi garyjp9, It would be very difficult for me say how long it took to make any difference to my bone density, partly because of the lack of bone scans and time in between each one. I initially started to take quite a few years ago to try to stop the slide in density. To find that the density had increased was a pleasant surprise.
No side effects at all, I have it in a yoghurt every morning.
Hope this helps.
My 2¢
My last oncologist (he moved away) said I no longer needed Xgeva, not even Prolia. My DEXA scores are all high except minor osteopenia in my spine.
My new oncologist told me I needed Xgeva and I told him I'd think about it. So I consulted with an outside MO at Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC. The MSK doc said she felt Xgeva had additional therapeutic value for men with bone mets, beyond bone strength. So I've started again but only every 3 months.
I do worry about the SEs and I really would like to take less drugs overall.
I think Tall_Allen probably has the best info, but I have to go with the docs I have.
I do think my current MO was operating by rote and just puts everyone on Xgeva. The doc @ MSK may just be supportive of whatever one's primary MO wants -- that's always a possibility -- she also supported my old MO's opinion for me to do Pluvicto and that treatment worked for me. So...
my MO is prone to consider it for more than osteoporosis. It does not fight mets when they are present, but it looks like hardening bones makes it harder for bone metastasis to spread. I have read a couple of studies confirming it. But if you mean actively fight bone metastasis then no.
ashpublications.org/bloodad... this is one but there are many that refer to metastasis management and not only to osteoporosis management
I took xgiva for two yrs and my 3 bone Mets in my pelvis disappeared.had to stop due to dead jaw syndrome which also healed on its own .
