Can lay people attend? Is anybody from here attending? I'd like to see Tall_Allen or one of our other great sources hear the latest information and be able to share. I'm afraid I don't have enough knowledge to make heads or tails of some of the topics discussed even if I heard a podcast or read a transcript.
Also this conference is where the top people get together and define/refine SOC treatments for 2024 based on recent advances in the field and which is then dissemated to the global medical community to guide prostate cancer treatment and decision making at the institutional, clinical, and practioner levels.
Kind of assume you want some of your best people working on this task.
One question; How do they know that these Dr's are the best? 4 years ago I was operated and radiated at a top cancer center in Florida...since then not a soul has ever contacted me after my treatment. They dont know if I am alive, recovered, continent, potent, happy, sad, moved...whatever...how do they know how well their treatments worked? They DONT!
There is no 'outcome based' rating of Dr's that would tell you this AND who does your surgery, who does your radiation MATTERS! But without the feedback that outcome based medicine gives you, how do PCa consumers of treatment know who to pick? I picked my surgeon on 'word of mouth.' Heck, this is how you find a mechanic for your car, its a hell of way to make one of the most important decisions of your life!
Unless I missed something in the article and in the event that these Dr's had outcome based feedback that placed them on this list, then the names here are a social selection of notables in their fields...definitely good Dr's but "the best in the World." Really?
One thing for sure......... I ain't gonna ask you to recommend an automobile mechanic for me to use.......(Just Breaking your personal Christmas decorations)...
...know what? After my surgery (of which I am overall satisfied with) I went on line and tried to "FIND" my surgeon...its a virtual self-inflicting procedure where you try to find out how good your doctor was at his work, after the fact (yeah, bass-ass backwards)...could not find ANYTHING on this guy. Well respected, recommended to me by other men, long time (15 years plus) Dr at a huge Cancer Center in FL...does hundreds of prostatectomies every year...and yet 'radio silence' on-line! Nada, zip, zilch, niet...could not find anything in the form of a substantive rating on this Doctor...found him in only one forum where he had a 5 star rating procedure that only 7 men participated in; what difference would that rating have made, even if it was a 1 out of 5 worst score...not enough participated.
I then found out that many of my other Dr's have scant to no feedback you can find on line from their past patients. The medical community I believe in no way, shape of form, wants this to develop...can you imagine! Yet, for men going under the knife, in PCa surgery, experience REALLY, REALLY matters and outcomes must be based on feedback.
So we go on. It will never change. Dr's will revolt and quit before they get rated by their patients. Sure, we will have some men that will be unhappy no matter what, but the outcomes from this surgery would be easily quantified, IF they really wanted to measure them. But, that would mean that they would have to take baselines from all men (almost never done; hmmmm wonder why), then contact us 1-2 years out (ditto) and remeasure where we are. Profound! Dont worry, they wont do this, Dr's will not be held accountable for bad outcomes (nor compensated for outstanding work) and the world keeps spinning...
Sorry for the long posts...digital ranting has its soothing effects. Rick
The Las Vegas based doctor talks about metric based performance reviews. I Suspect this is for internal usage by the hospital or whatever organizational entity is in charge. Of course, this data is not going to made public.
I don't know if this is practice is widespread across the US but it is completely absent in Canada. What's laughable is the doctor considers PR's a negative although acknowledges they can be positive as well.
As an aside, Dr. Eric Angus, the podcast host, treated me recently and I found him to be excellent.
Same here… Gleason 9 . Proton radiation treatment at a top notch facility in San Diego by a very experienced Doctor five years ago, no one has contacted me for follow up information about outcome.
